Setting Defaults For Studies Randomly Freezes Main Chart Window

Since all of my defaults were reset on the update, I'm having to redo them. However, after applying the update that introduced the new chart format and the subsequent versions up to 2125 I randomly get freezes when applying defaults to studies using the new "set defaults" button.

What happens:

-Add new study to chart
-Change defaults back to where I had them
-Apply study to chart (which works fine)
-Hit the Set Defaults button

After doing this the Main window for Sierra Chart locks up and I can't change anything in the chart. I can't access the main menu (to get logs) or even the cursor. When I click, I get the default windows audio error that you get if a dialogue box is still open and needs to be closed before continuing - though there are no dialogue boxes to close.

All other charts windows seem unaffected and can be accessed.

Also when this happens if there is an open program on the desktop behind SC, it pops to the forefront and becomes the active program.

The only way to restore access to the main chart window is to kill SC using Task Manager > End Task and restart.

This seems to happen randomly so if you're trying to recreate you may have to try with several studies.

When you see this, what happens if you press the Escape key on your keyboard.

We are not able to reproduce the issue. We even caused the Message Log to appear during this operation, in case that was causing some issue, and still could not reproduce.

Enable this option:
General Settings Window: Save Message Log to File (Global Settings >> General Settings >> Log >> Log)

This is so the Message Log is saved to a file in case there is any useful information there.

Nothing happens when I press ESC.

Was messing around with this a bit and can reproduce it everytime by bringing up a new study that is still in it's default "canned" state and then clicking "Set Defaults".

This is the last entry from Message Log:

"F.US.EPU20 [CB] 16 PriceChanges #17 | Caught an unhandled exception in c_Chart::WindowProc. Message: 32769, wParam: 32804, lParam: 0 | 2020-06-27 14:29:12.900"

Tried a different chart book and same thing happened with same error:

"F.US.EPU20 [CB] 0.75 Range #2 | Caught an unhandled exception in c_Chart::WindowProc. Message: 32769, wParam: 32804, lParam: 0 | 2020-06-27 14:34:42.593"

Are you running any custom studies?

The only custom study I use is the Schaff Trend Cycle (SCTC) from the Sierra Custom Studies list.

However, I removed all instances of it but got the same error when clicking "Set Defaults".

I then tried using a brand new chartbook and closed the others. Only had a 1 min chart and no studies applied. Get the same error.

Also tried on a different symbol. Same.

At this point we are not sure what the problem is. What particular study are you saving the defaults for?

Maybe it would help to also provide the chart which contains the study you are setting the defaults for, by following these instructions:

It doesn't matter which one I apply. They all throw the same error.

Did notice this other entry in one of the logs regarding an issue with a backup. This directly preceeds the unhandled exception. Not sure if this is related to the problem:

This is not making any sense and that is completely un-reproducible as we would expect and we are now beginning to suspect this is some sort of Windows operating system issue. But that really would be unlikely. So we do not know what to say about this issue right now.

Okay, thanks for looking into it.

Wanted to avoid it but I'll try a complete re-install and see if that fixes it.

Run Sierra Chart in Safe Mode and see if that resolves it:
Sierra Chart - Software Login Instructions: Using Safe Mode

Also try resetting Sierra Chart to a default configuration and see if that resolves it:
Resetting Sierra Chart to a Default State

You can reverse/revert this operation, so there is no problem with doing that.

Otherwise, we really do not have any other ideas about this. It is not reproducible and we cannot also reproduce it on a release build on Windows 10. There is just no trouble at all. And there should not be any problem. This is so straightforward and reliable the way this works. It uses the very same functionality that is used to save a study in a Chartbook. This is extensively used and completely stable functionality.

Looks like it's something related to my C drive where Sierra is installed (Samsung EVO SSD).

Here's what I did:

Installed SC in a new folder on the same C drive where it was previous installed. I copied the minimum number of files needed to restore my previous charts/settings.

Upon running the new install everything looked good and exactly how it was on the previous install.

However, the problem re-occured.

Next, I installed SC on a completely different drive (Seagate Sata2) and copied the same files and once again everything ran perfectly fine. However the problem was gone. I could use the Set Defaults button without freezing.

Weird. Problem only started with the new updates and not sure why all the study defaults didn't migrate over with the new chart windows.

Oh well.

No we definitely do not think this is drive related. That is next to impossible if everything else is completely stable.

But if the problem is resolved that is good.

Yeah, just have to buy another SSD now since I don't want to run this on a 7200rpm Sata.

This is the new error in the logs when it freezes:

Exception occurs in bool __cdecl c_Chart::ProcessMenuMessage(const unsigned short) at line: 3879 | 2020-06-29 12:27:07.105
