Sierra Chart crashes computer on opening chartbooks. Whole computer freezes when I open some of the chartbooks I have been using for years. Freeze won't allow to open a task manager to shutdown Sierra Chart.

It does not seem to be memory/CPU related (as shown by the task manager). It is not loaded studies related (tested with & without custom studies). It is not other installed software related (tested on a fresh install as well). And it is not SC version related (tested on 1568 as well as the latest 1641).

How can I troubleshoot this? Is there a log I can access?

These are the relevant help topics for this:

https://www.sierrachart.com/index.php?page=doc/helpdetails30.html#h30.8

If the whole computer is freezing, then for whatever reason your computer is not able to handle the processing necessary to load Intraday data and calculate the studies. You might want to try to restart your computer. Could also be caused by anti-malware software and we linked to that.

You can enable the option to save the Message Log to a file. Here is the setting for this:
General Settings Window: Save Message Log to File (Global Settings >> General Settings >> Log >> Log)

But we do not think there would be anything useful in the log for an issue like this.

As said this is not a CPU problem. The Sierra Chart triggered computer freeze may happen on chartbooks opening or on chartbooks closing (when it doesn't crash on opening, it always crashes on closing). The freeze is system-wide, not allowing for any further action with the OS interface, and it often comes together with detached Sierra Charts FLICKERING non-stop (as shown on the attached video on 1st post). Problem is not related to studies, corrupted data, Sierra Chart's "installation", antivirus/firewall, or corrupted chartbook files.

After exhaustive troubleshooting, I have determined Sierra Chart is incompatible with the latest video drivers for my computer.

You may want to add a section to your online guide about incompatibility with video drivers, assuming there is none.

It looks like you are running Windows 10. If so, this is the relevant thread about this:

Problems after 1644 update

See if updating to the latest version helps. Based on your description, we think it might.

Do let us know if the latest version resolves the problem so at least we know what we did was the solution.

Thanks. Win7 64. Problem solved. Sierra (or Sierra's detached charts) did not like the updated video drivers. Went back to prior drivers and problem gone. Crash happened with SC 1641 as well. I won't know if SC 1649 hangs up or not because I am not updating drivers again (too time consuming if need to do a system restore).

Culprit was the combination of:
. Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 388.13
. Intel VGA 1018144206
. Lenovo Display Link 7.4.48800.0

Tested on a clean Win7 install with nothing but those three drivers & an Intel's USB driver. Sierra would only crash if all three were present.

OK thank you for the information. We do think the real problem though is with the video drivers and not Sierra Chart since Sierra Chart has never been known to cause any kind of issue like this.

It is also possible the one thing we changed in the latest version would have resolved the issue.

Its all possible. SC was the only app crashing out of many. Maybe any app with detached windows would have frozen the system.

Do you have Global Settings >> General Settings >>Bring Detached Windows to Top on Main Window Focus enabled?

If so, then this most likely is the reason for the issue. This is a new "Feature"

I am now running SC1568, it doesn't have that feature.
