Good Afternoon,

What type of computer specs do you have at Sierra Chart for running the software for max performance and min lag? For example, a CPU processor, a graphics card, fiber internet, or regular internet? When I run the simulator, my computer struggles, and I have a budget build, so it's much better than my previous pc I just would like to get an idea for my next upgrades.

Hi,

This is a subjective question because it depends of your kind of trading.
If you have multiple monitors with a lot of charts open, a lot of studies, and need a fast update interval for your charts, you'll need a beast of a processor.
Graphic card doesn't matter unless OpenGL is activated.

On my side, my trading system only need a single screen with 4 DOMs and a few small charts.
The DOMs and the charts are in 2 separate instances which distribute the load on 2 CPU cores.
The DOMs have a 40ms refresh rate, the charts 100ms or more depending of the need.
For this setup, my laptop (Thinkpad P1 Gen6) processor Intel 13900H is plenty enough, and I don't use OpenGL.
The 2 cores are used at about 50% of their capacity.
You don't want the cores to be overloaded (like 80-90% constant load) because you'll experience lag during high market activity.

I can't speak about internet because I live in Europe... On a good day I have 120ms ping which is a pain for scalping. But no choice, I have to deal with it.

In summary, my small experience with Sierra Chart makes me understand that what is the most important thing is a CPU with high single core performance because Sierra Chart isn't a multi-core program.
High core count is useless unless you use a lot of sub-instances, high single core performance is everything that matter.
RAM quantity, 32GB is plenty enough.
Graphic card is useless unless OpenGL is activated.
A Sierra Chart dedicated SDD is also a must to speed up the loading of the charts.

Do you mean chart replays?:
When I run the simulator, my computer struggles,

This would be unusual to have a problem with a chart replay. Or do you mean Sierra Chart itself becomes less responsive, instead of the computer?

You have to love blt's 192GB Ram and 8 widescreens!

More traders should have backup wireless (Starlink?).

Hello everyone!

I am about to build my new trading station and I came across this post because I am looking for some answer about the choice of the CPU.

I run 4 different instances of SC, one per monitor.

From SC "manual", I read that the best performance is obtained with CPUs that perform well on single core, for example, one of them being the Intel Core Ultra 9 285K (latest).

However, my question is: if I run 4 different instances of SC to distribute the loads, do I still need to think in terms of performance on single core, or do I have to think more about performance on multicore?

Because this open the possibility to shift from Intel to AMD with its Ryzen 9 9950X or X3D, which perform best on multi-core.

I am not a geek expert though so I don't know how to properly interpret this info.

Hope someone can help me out!

Thanks in advance!

Fabio,
Focus on single core performance.

If you run 4 instances, SierraChart only uses 4 cores.
Ryzen 9 9950X has 16 cores, 12 of them will not be used by SierraChart, so multi-core performance is meaningless.

About Intel CPU : They use a mix of Performance-Core and Efficiency-Core.
SierraChart instances must run on Performance-Core.
Keep in mind that Windows 11 uses 2 performance cores to run its background tasks (on my PC it's like this, maybe it's different somewhere else)
It means that to run 4 instances, it is best to have a CPU with at least 6 performance cores (2 for Windows tasks, 4 for SierraChart)

This is not true:
Ryzen 9 9950X has 16 cores, 12 of them will not be used by SierraChart, so multi-core performance is meaningless.
Sierra Chart does use, multiple cores for some functions.:
Performance

Based on the processors you gave we would recommend the Intel because it has more cores.

My bad. I didn't know that.

I use a script to launch each SierraChart instances on a specific core.
And I deactivated the HyperThreading.
By doing that, I guess I killed the ability of SierraChart to use multi-thread on multiple cores ?

Normally we do not recommend using hyperthreading. As we understand it does slightly reduce per core performance. On all of our servers we routinely disable hyperthreading.

Also, this is not a commonly used feature at this time but the new Sierra Chart screen sharing, in the newest versions, extensively uses multiple threads. And on our servers, multiple threads are extensively used.
