Post From: Solving Slow/Nonresponsive Historical Data Downloads

The following are the steps to solve slow or nonresponsive historical data downloads.
The most important thing to understand is that slow or nonresponsive historical data downloads can have numerous causes.
There is not any one set cause and solution.
A nonresponsive download could also be a slow download that it is taking a long time to complete. So there can be a misinterpretation of what is actually happening.
1. First understand that if the historical data is not coming from one of the Sierra Chart provided data feeds, then historical data will be slow and can be nonresponsive. This will especially be true with Rithmic or Interactive Brokers.
The solution in this case is to use the Denali Exchange Data Feed for market data:
Denali Exchange Data Feed
Not only do you have to use a Service Package which provides this data feed, which are packages 10, 11, 12, you also need to activate the exchange fee that you need market data for. You need to do both.
If you do not require real-time data, you can use the Sierra Chart Historical Data Service:
Sierra Chart Historical Data Service (can only be used on its own and not integrated with Trading services)
Even though you are properly configured for the Denali Data Feed you still may not be using it if you are using a CME nonprofessional exchange and your "Verified trading account ending date" is in the past. You can determine this date here:
If this date is in the past, then refer to the instructions here:
Real-Time Exchange Data Feeds Available From Sierra Chart: Connecting Only Once a Month to Trading Account to Support CME Group Exchange Fees
2. Another relevant point is how to cancel existing historical data downloads in case one of them is taking a long time or is nonresponsive.
In version 2453 this can be accomplished by doing one of the following:
File >> Disconnect and then File >> Connect to Data Feed.
Edit >> Cancel All Downloads
In earlier versions you need to use:
Edit >> Cancel All Downloads
Edit Menu: Edit >> Cancel All Downloads
3. If historical data downloads are taking a long time to complete, reduce the amount of data that has to be downloaded in the charts. This can be done with this setting:
Chart Settings: Days to Load for Intraday Chart Data Type (Chart >> Chart Settings >> Data Limiting >> Load Data Limiting Method: Days to Load menu)
And there is also this relevant setting which can be reduced:
Data/Trade Service Settings: Maximum Historical Intraday Days to Download (Global Settings >> Data/Trade Service Settings >> Common Settings) (Although this does not affect Continuous Futures Contract charts. Those types of charts will always download the amount of days that is needed.)
After making changes, cancel the Downloads with Edit >> Cancel All Downloads, and then start them again following this procedure:
Historical Intraday Data (Missing Data / Download Errors / Viewing More Data): Retrying the Download When There is Data in the Chart
4. To improve historical Intraday data download performance, refer to:
Historical Intraday Data (Missing Data / Download Errors / Viewing More Data): Improving Historical Intraday Data Downloading Performance
When tick by tick data (1 Tick) is being downloaded, when markets are more volatile, then there is a lot more data to download and it becomes slower. Something to be aware of.
5. If are an Interactive Brokers user, then refer to this information here to make sure you are using the correct symbols:
*Important Notice*: Interactive Brokers Symbol Changes
Using an incorrect symbol with Interactive Brokers is another cause for slow data downloading.
