During the afternoon and evening of 2018-12-22, the SierraChart.com website was unavailable.

This was due to a hardware malfunction . We do have a backup server and have transferred over to this backup server.

The delay in the transfer had to do with ensuring integrity of the databases before we transferred them to the new server.

The problem is, that it takes time for the domain name SierraChart.com to remap to the new IP address. So it may appear to be down longer for many users than it actually was.

We are going to reduce this transition time to as low as possible but it does not change the current transition time for today.

We apologize for this issue.

Here is the documentation for using Sierra Chart when off-line which is applicable to this kind of outage scenario as well:

We are not seeing any problems with any missing files on the new server for the Sierra Chart software itself. Try downloading or updating Sierra Chart again using this link:
Software Download: Software Download

And also go to your operating system command line and execute the following command:

IPconfig /flushDNS

Some DNS servers have not yet updated to the new IP. You could use the Google DNS servers at 8.8.8.8.

Now we understand that this is not a good situation at all for the Sierra Chart server to be down for hours and up to a day for some users due to the DNS not yet updating.

We do have backup procedures in place and we do maintain a backup server. The transition delay had to do with verifying the integrity of the databases which we also maintain backups of.

Now the other problem is that we had a TTL for www.sierrachart.com of 86,400 . Normally this is set to 10,800 (three hours) but we were getting close to 10 million DNS queries per month and we just made a quick change to put this up to 86,400 until we could upgrade to a higher plan and then unfortunately we had overlooked that. We are going to upgrade to a higher plan to take this TTL back down to three hours.

Now none of our data servers were affected and we always have redundancy with all of our data servers. Only the main Sierra Chart Web server was affected.

And Sierra Chart itself on your desktop does not depend on the Web server to login in most cases. Only when logging in for the very first time, or you have not logged in for several weeks, is there a dependency on the main Sierra Chart server to get in to the Sierra Chart program itself.

We just realized now that the website was showing the latest version as 1852 when it should have been 1853. It is now 1853. This is now the latest version.
