I chart Intraday and Historical charts for a given instrument - both are Continuous Contract basis. For Intraday charts my Chart Settings are set to only load 70 days of data. I never do back testing and never do market replays. Can I safely delete old .scid files that are not used to form the current continuous futures contract by going into the SC data folder in Windows and deleting the file? Eg for the ES the current front month is the June contract and I am assuming SC is using the March and June contracts to form the continuous contract for June. So could I delete the December 2015 and earlier .scid files? Or maybe to be safe the September 2015 file and earlier? Thanks |

Yes you can safely delete those files and this is documented here: https://www.sierrachart.com/index.php?page=doc/doc_ChartDataFiles.html Sierra Chart Support - Engineering Level Your definitive source for support. Thanks for that. Just thought I would document an observation in case other users come across the same situation, or you may want to add it to the documentation: When cleaning up the .scid files I noticed .dly files for 3 symbols that I had no idea what they were for (CB, DY, E6). My datafeed is TTnet via AMP and they did not match any instruments. I did a Google search and discovered they were Barchart symbols. Given SC use Barchart for the SC datafeed I assumed the SC s/w must look to Barchart for historical data to download if the data is not currently available from the TTnet feed and/or the historical data available from TTnet does not go back far enough. I then went to the Barchart web page (http://www.barchart.com/) and did a Ticker Symbol search and discovered those 3 symbols are Crude Brent Oil, DAX and Euro FX respectively. Given I am no longer trading any of those I chose to delete the files. Edit: as SC point out in post below, they were .dly files not .scid files, post fixed accordingly. You definitely would not have Intraday data files for those specific symbols. Only Historical Daily data files.

I figured out how to delete the old data. You can open all your chartbooks, go into the data folder and cut all the SCID files and paste them in a different folder (the open charts will keep the active ones from being moved), skip the ones that can't be moved, then you can delete the new folder with all the old data. After you roll your contract the historical data will download as small .dly files so as long as you have that one intraday scid file it shouldn't screw up the Sierra setup. Hope it helps. I just deleted 4 gig of useless files. So far it's working. Stoked! |
