I get this Windows error message when I use the File - Close All Chartbooks command, usually after 3 or 4 chartbooks have been saved/closed. I will have to suppose the rest do not get saved.

Running SC955 on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit. All Windows updates installed.

Worked fine yesterday, problem started today.

Please send us 4 of your Chartbooks to support AT Sierra Chart.com so we can test them.

We tested your Chartbooks and Spreadsheet files several times by exiting from Sierra Chart and saving all of them. We did not notice any errors, exceptions or abnormal shutdowns. We tested this about ten times.

We tend to suspect the problem is related to Spreadsheets. We are developing a whole new spreadsheet feature in Sierra Chart. Although this is going to not be ready for at least 6 months from now.

The only thing we can recommend now is to make sure your system has sufficient memory.

Did you just start noticing this problem with a particular Sierra Chart version? Have you tried restarting your computer?

Re your 2 posts, I am running the system with 8 Gb RAM and this has been sufficient thus far, despite TWS having a reputation as a bit of a RAM hog.

I only noticed this problem after I did updates from SC924 to SC955 for 2 installed copies with multiple chartbooks, 1 with IB as the data service and the other with SC Historical Data. I know that was a big jump, but after I had the spreadsheet formula issue with the 924 update, I was hesitant to jump into more updates.

Closing and saving the chartbooks one by one works fine, it is only when I close all, save all and then rapidly choose 'yes' to save succeeding spreadsheets that the problem occurs. Also, it does not occur every single time, so I am not surprised that you have not been able to replicate it.

If you find a way to avoid this, then do that. Really this is hard for us to know the source of the problem. We are not having other reports of this. We are suspicious that the problem relates to spreadsheets or .NET and that will be solved in about six months. So longer-term we will have a solid solution assuming this is the source of the problem. Although, really we generally do not hear about issues with Spreadsheets or .NET so that may not even be the problem.

Perhaps there is some other issue going on we are not aware of.

Not certain what help we can provide at this time. If we remember correctly, you were having some Abnormal shutdown problem previously. We did not have other similar reports of a problem at that time and could not see anything wrong. If you are able to try another computer, that is recommended.

Since I last posted this, I have bought a new computer and OS. It is now a Dell Precision T3600 running Windows 7 Pro.

This problem per post #1 above never went away, but now it is getting progressively worse.

Running SC 1048 and sometimes closing chartbooks one at a time, even at intervals of over a minute, can result in this problem of "Sierra Charts has stopped working".

I copied over the chartbooks and spreadsheets from the old computer to the new PC, apart from that all copies of SC were clean installs.

The problem always arises at the point of the prompt to save the spreadsheet, never when prompted to save the chartbook, so your previous suspicion about a spreadsheet issue is probably correct. Logically, it can't be the computer, OS, or a corrupted .NET because these are all new but the problem persists/worsens.

Can you suggest a workaround or anything else I could try, as it is getting really disruptive? BTW the abnormal shutdown issue you mentioned in post 6 was not me.

Similar answer to what we said above:

What exactly are you doing with Spreadsheets? Are using one of the Spreadsheet studies?

Every chart has a spreadsheet study attached, for 2 purposes.

1) To plot lines on the charts based on calculations performed in the spreadsheet.
2) To capture data from some of the studies installed on the charts. I get this by having a summary sheet which just collates data from the other sheets in the same file. I then copy this data over to Excel for the heavy duty number crunching. Previously my SC spreadsheets were a lot more complex with a lot of INDEX and MATCH formulas, but I stopped that and moved it all to Excel. Did not help the problem.

I am not a programmer, so this may be off the mark, but I have used SC for some time so I would like to share my observation and make a suggestion which might help solve the problem somewhat.

When I first started using SC, if an installation had 3 chartbooks open, tabs for all 3 spreadsheet files were visible. Later this changed to just the spreadsheet file attached to the active chartbook, with the others being hidden. The problem started from sometime after this.

When closing all chartbooks, we have the option to select "Save All", which saves the chartbooks. Then one after the other, the dialogue box pops up asking if we want to save a single spreadsheet. It is always at this point, when the pop up is happening, that SC crashes. So, my guess is that during the pop up process, whatever conflict happens.

Suggestion: Would it help if we had the option to "Save All Spreadsheets" that appears if we select Close All Chartbooks? That way only a single pop up.

I know this will not help the crashes that happen when I am closing single chartbooks, but it would in any case be an enhancement for ease of use for everyone.

Also, don't know if this is relevant, but I have SC installed on the C drive along with all other programmes, but the Data folders are on the D drive, because the data files will get progressively larger and I want to keep the C drive lean. On my previous computer the C and D drives were on the same physical HDD, on my current PC C drive is a SSD and D drive is a HDD.

Thank you for the information. Clearly the problem is due to spreadsheets. The new spreadsheets under development will solve this problem.

We will also look into adding a command to make a Spreadsheet window always visible no matter what Chartbook is active.
