Hello, I tried to order SPXS today and received the following message.

“Symbol Error - (unknown symbol with ID 1188) is unknown, unavailable, or improperly formatted. The contract description specified for SPXS is ambiguous. | 2019-04-18 11:21:46”

The order appears on the chart but does not fill, and when I cancel the order on the chart I get another message that the order cannot be cancelled because it was not found.

I went to Chart Settings and clicked Apply Global Symbol Settings and that did not fix the problem. All other symbols I trade work fine just this one has the error.

A more detailed symbol specification is necessary. We have set this up.

Follow the instructions here to update the Symbol Settings:
Global Symbol Settings: Update Global Symbol Settings

After updating the symbol settings you can find the symbol in File >> Find Symbol >> Specific Stocks.

I followed the instructions in the Update Symbol Settings, I didn’t do the Full Reset of Symbol Settings which was in the next section.

I also went in and deleted the files in the data folder so they would be downloaded again and then clicked Apply Global Symbol Settings and when I tried to place an order I received the same error messages.

I don’t know if this makes a difference I only tried this with the second installation which is in its own folder, I have two connections enabled with Sierra. When the market closes I thought I’d do this with the other installation.

Awhile back I had to manually change all my stock charts’ intraday sessions to 9:30:00 to 15:59:59 and futures to 18:00:00 to 17:59:59 because they were set to all begin at midnight 00:00:00 to 23:59:59.

If you write back and say to do a Full Reset of Symbol Settings is there a way to keep the current time settings that I’ve set up for all my charts?

When I did the Update Symbol Settings I left the box that was already checked for Apply Intraday Session Times to Intraday Chart.

Reading the instructions, I noticed that it said further down on the page to disable the checkbox “if you do not want the Session Times settings in the chart changed.”

Even though I left the box checked all the intraday times are how they were before the update 9:30 to 15:59 etc.

Could you clarify if I should leave the box checked or unchecked to keep my current times settings if you tell me to do a full reset.

I noticed something else that I thought might fix the problem but it didn’t. In the Global System Settings when you scroll to find SPXS under the Historical tab is had MSFT written there. I deleted it and downloaded the data again but received the same error message when trying to place an order.

In the Global Symbol Settings there should not be the exact symbol SPXS. If you see that, then Remove it.

What you should see is this symbol:
SPXS-STK-SMART/ARCA

That is the symbol to use.

I just abbreviated it when I wrote to you, I should have been clearer. What I meant was:
SPXS-STK-SMART/ARCA

And that is what had MSFT written in the Historical tab which I deleted. I don’t know how MSFT would have gotten there, I never typed it in.

Do you want me to do a Full Reset since the problem still occurs?

Before I do what you wrote, I just noticed something that I'd like to try.

In Global Settings > Symbol Settings when I scroll to find SPXS it’s there listed as SPXS-STK-SMART/ARCA but when I scroll to find my other stocks such as SPXL or TQQQ, SPY, DIA, QQQ etc. they are not listed there.

Maybe if I select Remove to delete SPXS-STK-SMART/ARCA that will solve the problem, can I try that first before sending the message log to you?

For those other symbols there are standard patterns which match with them.

You could remove that symbol but it will not help. It is possible the currency has to be added to the symbol:

SPXS-STK-SMART/ARCA-USD

I removed the symbol, deleted and reloaded, disconnect, reconnect etc. and it did not help as you thought it wouldn’t, but I wanted to give it a try anyways.

I just sent the message log, I selected the Send For Analysis button so you should have it now.

The log is showing this:
Mapping SPXS to SPXS. Service code: equities.us | 2019-04-18 15:52:54

We are not seeing this symbol anywhere in the log:
SPXS-STK-SMART/ARCA

Make sure you use SPXS-STK-SMART/ARCA and remove charts for SPXS.

That worked! I was a bit confused I thought when you wrote SPXS-STK-SMART/ARCA you were referring to what was in the scrolled list in Symbol Settings.

I didn’t realize I had to type “SPXS-STK-SMART/ARCA” in the symbol field instead of SPXS to bring up a chart and be able to trade from it.

Interesting that SPXS will bring up a chart that works but it cannot be traded. It’s counterpart SPXL uses ???? symbol mapping and is not listed in the Global Symbol Settings list which is the same as all the others QQQ, SPY, DIA, etc.

Thanks for your help!

This is why we added the symbol to File >> Find Symbol >> Specific Stocks.

So that you could easily select it.

You get a chart for it because it is a valid symbol for the Sierra Chart Exchange Data Feed but it is incomplete/ambiguous for Interactive Brokers.
