I am using Sierra Charts for a two week trial. Before submitting to the paid service, I need to know if the software can perform the following functions: 1. Create a Chartbook for stocks whereby I scan the NYSE (over 7000 stocks)for specified technical criteria 2. Create a Chartbook for ETFs whereby I can scan for certain technical criteria 3. Same thing as 1. & 2. above for Futures and Currencies. So far I am enjoying the trial period which is better than Ninjatrader. I am looking for something that is close to TradeStation and it's Radar Screen. Because I live in Australia I cannot open an account with either TradeStation or TOS. Hope you can help. Yes we can help. 1. Yes you can do this. Here is the scanning documentation: http://www.sierrachart.com/index.php?l=doc/doc_AlertCondAndScan.html#Scanning It is a subsection of the Alert Condition documentation. 7000 stocks is a lot and Sierra Chart does not provide a built-in symbol list for this. Therefore, you have to create or obtain the symbol list and import it into Sierra Chart. For scanning this large number of symbols, we assume you just need historical data. You will need to use an external data service for a large number of symbols. We recommend the Barchart data service: http://www.sierrachart.com/index.php?l=doc/Barchart.com.php Sierra Chart does offer its own historical data service, but you are not going to be able to get 7000 symbols a day from it. That's great to hear. Just as matter of interest,who do you see as your main competitor in the field of charting analysis. As I mentioned in the earlier email I am not allowed to open an account with TradeStation because I live in Australia which I believe is the best out there. How do you compare and how far are you from having the same scanning capabilities as TradeStation's Radar Screen. When my trial period ends can you please tell me which level I need to subscribe to be able to do what I have mentioned above, ie. scanning the entire NYSE which I believe is for stocks and ETF's if I'm not mistaken. Could you also tell me how I can obtain the symbol list for the NYSE. Also you mention to use Barchart data service, is that free? The service that you will be offering for about 25USD, will that replace the use of Barchart when it's up and running. Regards, J. Cilmi |

We cannot comment on competitors or the capabilities of other programs. We can only answer questions about Sierra Chart. You will need Sierra Chart package 1 to do what you want. We do not know where to obtain a symbol list for the NYSE. Maybe the NYSE website has it? The Barchart data service is not free. It is about 50 USD a month. How will I know when this new historical data service will be available. I will probably go with Sierra Chart package 3. Also the main scanning that I want to do is based on the TTM Squeeze indicator that I will be purchasing from Simpler Options. This indicator has been developed to run with a few charting platforms, Sierra Chart being one of them. If I need help to specify a certain criteria based on this indicator will some one be able to help me to set it up. Regards, J. Cilmi |

My free trial has finished. I would like to subscribe for package 3 but I am still confused about your data feed. From what I could see from the free trial is that you have a list of instruments for futures and forex but what about stocks in the NYSE, NASDAQ, S&P 500, ETFs. Even stocks that have options. If I want to chart any stocks contained in the NYSE, or in the NASDAQ or SP500 or any of the ETFs, how would I do that, because you stated earlier that I need to import a list from the NYSE to do any scanning that I want. Also when you set up a scan condition, is that done through a programming language or formulas. Because all I want do is scan for a condition where a certain indicator crosses over another indicator. Do you need real-time data streaming data for stocks? To open a stock chart in Sierra Chart, you just need to go to File >> Find Symbol and manually type in the symbol. No, all I need is End Of Day data for my analysis. What you are saying is that I can type any stock symbol in the "Find Symbol" tab for any stock in the NYSE. Does that include any stocks I want to look up on the NASDAQ and S&P500. What about ETFs? Earlier on I was told that I needed to set up a symbol list for all the stocks in the NYSE for me to do any scanning because there could be well over 5000 stocks. You already have the data base for all stocks from what you are telling me, so why do I have to worry about creating a symbol list which I may have to update regularly according to support at the NYSE. Why can't I just create a scan condition and use your data base to find candidates that meet the scan criteria. Also I would appreciate if some one could help me to write a simple scan condition like a moving average crossing over another moving average. For end of day stock data, you just need to use the Sierra Chart Historical Data Service which is included with package 3: http://www.sierrachart.com/index.php?l=doc/SierraChartHistoricalData.html ETFs are included as well as all of the US markets. At the bottom of the page linked to you will find all of the exchanges. Could you please confirm that to conduct a scan, say for the NYSE, do I still need to place the file containing all the symbols on the NYSE in the Associated Watch list first. If that is the case then I would need to set up different chart books and each chart book has it's appropriate .txt file in the Associated Watch list. For example: Chartbook for NYSE - the Associated watch list would have a .txt file for the NYSE Chartbook for ETFs - the Associated watch list would have a .txt file for ETFs Chartbook for Futures - the Associated watch list would have a .txt file for Futures etc. Would this be the way to set up the Associated Watch lists so that daily scans can be done on each chartbook? You have given me a link above for all stock listings. My question is, if there are updates to those .txt files how will they be reflected once I enter them in the appropriate Associated Watch list. Do I have to update them manually myself. Do I enter the .txt file say for the NYSE into the Associated Watch list or do I have to enter each individual symbol in that file, it could be several thousands of them. Regards, J. Cilmi |

Some of these questions are not within the scope of our support . If you are not able to handle this on your own, then we recommend using another program. You have given me a link above for all stock listings. My question is, if there are updates to those .txt files how will they be reflected once I enter them in the appropriate Associated Watch list. Do I have to update them manually myself. The symbols files we linked to cannot be used directly on their own because they contain a descriptive name for each symbol. So you have to do some editing of the data. After any updates to the files, you will have to manually import the data again.
