More RAM = More Speed Loading Speed?

Hi there.

I believe that I have a reasonably powerful PC. It has an intel i7 processor 4770K 3.5GHz plus 16GB of RAM (Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz) and the MOBO is a GIGABYTE GA-H87-HD3. OS is W10.

I noticed that when I started using more charts and more days to load (to run the simulator), the more the loading times grew longer. Thing is I am using at least 10 charts to trade, what I mean by that is the number of charts opened at the same time and spread across two monitors. I noticed that the software starts to get sluggish when we keep adding more charts to the same chartbook, yes I could spread between different chartbooks and a new parallel instance of Sierra but I wanna use the simulator going way back in time, so the only way is a lot of charts in the same chartbook with a lot of days loaded, and that is taking a toll on the processing power.

Just wanted to know if adding more RAM is overkill and won't impact the performance of the software, or it is better to save for a more recent and faster CPU? Thing is that for all charts to run in sync when in simulator mode they need to have the same number of days loaded in all of them, otherwise the charts gets messed up.

you need a faster harddrive.. go for a NVMe SSD like this one https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/product/consumer/960pro/

Yes the storage device is going to make the most difference. And yes especially the M.2 ones.

More RAM may help. Certainly a faster CPU with more cores is going to help. Using multiple instances of Sierra Chart helps also. And increasing the Chart Update Interval also helps:
Chart Settings: Chart Update Interval in Milliseconds (Chart >> Chart Settings >> Display >> Chart Update Interval menu)

And yes these drives are really very very high-performance:

All new servers we acquire will use these types of drives.

@Andreas

I wish I could, but my MOBO is PCIe or SATA, I am limited to SSD matching those specs.

If I were to buy a new MOBO then I would be basically building a new PC, which I think I do not need.

@Sierra Engineering

What I can do is adding extra 8GB or 16GB to my rig and swapping the CPU for an i7 4790K which is the the highest step of the 4th gen processors (my MOBO won't work with 5th gen onward). But I suspect I won't notice any difference swapping the CPU because it is only a 500Mhz increase of speed if you compare the specs of 4770K and 4970K.

The SSD you mean only to install the Sierra Charts? I could get the smallest SATA or PCIe SSD just for it. I can get something like the Western Digital WD Green which has 120GB and read speed is 540MB/s.

You have a free pcie slot? Try something like this https://www.amazon.com/QNINE-Adapter-Controller-Expansion-Converter/dp/B075MDH28Y

Hi. Ah nice! Thanks for the tip. I just wonder if this new gear (the adapter and NvMe protocol) are gonna really work with my rig, I mean, isn't my MOBO supposed to support it in it's specs? I mean, is it not something BIOS related too, I do not know it is just a matter of an adapter (like inserting a 60 pin famicom cart into a 72 pin NES slot using an adapter, do you get it?). I will have to look into it.

Alright, gonna do that.

Just one last question that wasn't answered by the staff here:

This high speed SSD is for Sierra only to be installed on, right? I do not need to install the OS on it necessarily.

Cheers

It is a good idea to have a dedicated solid-state drive for Sierra Chart. You do not have to install anything else on it.

@Sierra

I have ordered a Crucial BX300 120GB SSD, it seems to be the best on it's price range, reading and write speeds over 500MB/s, on some benchmark tests it even goes higher. It is praised for loading software/files very fast.

If it boots windows in 10 seconds then I can't see how it would not improve Sierra performance.

What I am gonna do is do a fresh windows install on this SSD and also install Sierra on it. Having a dedicated OS and SSD for Sierra I think it is the best move now, I think I won't even need to buy more RAM. I will post here how it goes.

If you get an SSD, make sure you leave the Data folder where it is under Sierra Chart, as that is where the historical data is being loaded from. Also, if you don't need Tick Data, you can save a lot of space (and loading times) by going to Time based storage units in Data/Trade Service settings.
