Sierra stops working - cannot close program without manually shutting off computer

Hello, I’ve written before in the linked topic below about setting up Sierra on two computers with two data connections.

Running Sierra on two computers with Logon error message

Everything seemed to be working well. I have Sierra installed on two separate computers, paid for two connections to real time Sierra data. I have two user names and passwords from Interactive Brokers so I could install two separate IB TWS programs on each computer.

I set up the Data Services following the instructions in the Sierra user guide, they each have a separate instance number. Currently I am still in SIM mode since I want to get the problems worked out first.

Tonight, a few times IB would lose its market data connection and then it would establish it again in a few seconds, that happened on both computers at the same time. But I don’t think it affected the problem that occurred later on with only one of the computers.

So far one computer stopped working three times. I had to manually shut it down since even Task Manager would not display properly for me to ‘End Task,’ although one time I did get Task Manager to work but that time I shut down IB TWS first even though IB said when I checked the data button on its screen that it was connected.

I noticed this when I was reading the user manual again:

Interactive Brokers Trading Service: Running Multiple TWS Instances

It said I should use two different port numbers for running two instances on two computers. I thought that meant two separate instances on one computer and two other separate instances on another computer.

I have only one installation/one instance on one computer with its own Sierra data connection and another separate installation/one instance on another computer with its own Sierra data connection.

Should I change one of the port numbers? Or is having two separate instance numbers in the Data Services section all I need to do?

Also, I am trying to avoid paying for more data since I am already subscribing to two data connections from Sierra so I didn’t sign up for IB’s market data and was hoping I could use the delayed data that comes with the account. I didn’t think I would need real time data from IB to place trades through Sierra, is that correct?

Is there is a place that has archive logs so I could see what was written before the system froze up? When I start Sierra again it starts out with a new log, and I copied something that is there now even though it seems to be working properly, hasn’t froze again since I started it up awhile ago.

The following is written four times, one message right after the other.

“Message from IB: Market data farm connection is inactive but should be available upon demand.usfarm.us. IB Error Code: 2108. Request ID: -1. | 2017-07-13 01:39:57”

That is written on the computer that keeps freezing, it’s not written on the log from the computer that has not had a problem.

Thanks.

This sounds like an issue with your system. Sounds like there is high CPU usage. Even if Sierra Chart were using a lot of CPU usage for an unknown reason, it would not cause the whole system to be slow.

That documentation refers to running more than one instance of TWS on the same computer. Not different computers. You do not need to use different port numbers for running TWS on different computers.

We do not think so.

You could enable Global Settings >> General Settings >> Save Message Log to File. The files will be in the Logs subfolder.

This is a normal message. This is completely unrelated to any freezing problems you are having.

If your entire system is freezing, that is a system issue. That would not be caused by either TWS or Sierra Chart. Neither of them have any ability to cause a systemwide problem. We recommend uninstalling any third-party security or firewall software you are running. And make sure your video driver is up to date.

Thanks for the information, I probably didn’t make it clear when I used the word “froze.” The system would still work, other programs, TWS, etc. Just Sierra was frozen and I could not on a couple of occasions get Task Manager to display properly and when I did it could not shut down Sierra.

The only way was to manually shut off the computer. There was one time, by shutting down TWS first, I was able to use Task Manager to close Sierra. But TWS was not frozen but I tried shutting it down anyways.

After I wrote previously the problem did not occur again. I’ll let you know in this topic again if the same problem happens and I’ll start to save the log files to a folder since that might help explain it if it does happen again.

One thing to check is the CPU usage of Sierra Chart when this occurs.
