How To Improve Chart Load Speed?

I'm using SC charting to help with currency trading. The issue I'm having is the currency files are large and I need to use years of data. This is causing long chart upload speeds if I want to view to many days (ex. 2 years-730 days). I've been stuck using less than 200 days just so I dont have to wait as long. My computer is i7-2600 quad-core with 16 GB ram, and 250 GB HDD.

I'm wondering if switching or adding a SSD will improve chart upload speeds? And if so, will the performance of the SSD be lowered since the currency files are so large (7-8 GB each, 28 pairs)

Any help would be great

Yes you definitely should use a solid-state drive. Sierra Chart should be installed on a solid-state drive. The solid-state drive performance will not be affected by the Sierra Chart files. All of our servers use Intel SSDs. They are very good storage devices.

The main solution to the problem though is to increase the Intraday Data Storage Time Unit. This is explained in help topic 30.12.

I know SC uses tick data for currency pairs since the currency market doesnt provide volume. Would switching from 1 tick to 1 second in the Intraday Data Storage Time Unit affect the SC tick volume?

No it would not. You will still get the same tick volume numbers.

We recommend increasing it to 10 Seconds for very good performance.

Thanks for the response

I tried 10 seconds and it fixed the issue. Not only does it load faster, but has less space on the HDD so no need for SSD. Last question out of curiosity, what am I losing from switching from 1 tick to 10 seconds? If I do a replay, will skip 10 seconds instead of tick by tick, etc?

Or is 1 tick only useful for futures trading like the S&P?

Yes, this is one example of a limitation of using 10 seconds.

1 Tick data is mainly when you are using variable timeframe bars instead of chart bars based upon a fixed amount of time. Or when performing detailed volume analysis like with the Numbers Bars study.
