New instances - Screen Images and Chartbooks

Hi, I have 2 Copies of SC installed and on Copy 2, I use 3 instances (so I can see multiple chartbooks across multiple screens during trading).

I tried "Edit > Screen Images > Save Main Window to File" function to save the screen image however, the image turned up in the Copy 1 "Images" folder and there was nothing in it (file is 0 KB). I tried "Screen Images > Save Chart to File" and this worked but again the location was in Copy 1 "Images" folder instead of Copy 2.

Secondly, when using a New Instance, is it possible to open chartbooks from the main SC "Data" folder and have them remain there, rather than being copied into the New Instance "Data" folder? I use New Instances to view multiple Workbooks during trading but outside that I only need the Main instance running and still want to access the chartbooks. How to view/share Chartbooks across instances without creating multiple copies?

Hey, thanks for the reply.

Actually, I just tried opening a chartbook in Instance #2 from the Instance #1 Data folder (File > Open Chartbook > then select 'Folder' option and choose Instance #1 folder). I made some edits then saved & closed it. I then re-opened the same file from Instance #1 and the edits were there...so it seems you can have chartbook files located in Instance #1 but still open them from other instances without creating multiple copies.

Well, I thought my reply was something you already knew after I reread your post.... So I deleted it...
So now ya learned me something new...

I started saving chartbooks in multiple instances because for backup, and I can tweak one while looking at the original, but I have also learned every time I want to tweak a chart , to make a duplicate first and leave the original alone, and tweak the new copy, because I seem to always make some change that messes up every thing on the chart and trying to undo it is way too complicated..

That has also helped me when I choose which chartbooks to load at start up, leaving an old copy behind... Such as saving chartbook MAY23 ES to JUNE23 ES.

Sometimes when I duplicate a chart to an existing chartbook sometimes it will lock up Sierra Chart and I have to do the control alt delete to kill off that instance..

Then I have to duplicate to a new chartbook... it does not like duplicating charts , it always resets something ....

Why 3 instances for 3 monitors?

Thank You

The chart image folder is changeable and this is the setting:
General Settings Window: Chart Image Folder (Global Settings >> General Settings >> Paths >> Files and Folder Paths)

Regarding where Chartbooks are stored and can be opened from, yes that can be changed through the Folder button on the Open File window but we always would advise that sub instances have their own separate Chartbooks. However, if you do not have problems using common Chartbooks that might be all right.

SC Engineering - thanks for the path details.

Of more concern is the "Save Main Window to File" function produces a file with nothing in it when using Copy 2 of SC. See screen shot of Windows Explorer with 3 files - first file is using "Save Main Window to File" function. Second file is using "Save Chart to File". So I can save an individual chart from my Main Window but not the whole Main Window, which is what I need. This is using Copy 2 of SC. The 3rd file is using "Save Main Window to File" on Copy 1 and seems to work. So for some reason cannot save Main Window to file from Copy 2 (from any instance)??

User303857 - the reason for 3 instances is to see 3 workbooks at once. Each workbook is a different market with 3 or 4 charts per workbook in the same general layout. I prefer not to open all 3 workbooks in one instance and then have to flick through tabs to check whats going on in each market. I've missed opportunities in the past doing this. Open to suggestions on how I could do this more effectively though.

Regarding post #5, this makes no sense as to why that problem would occur. It is not reproducible by us. It might be some kind of file permission issue on your side.

We also will be changing the filename to no longer include spaces.

One of the reasons the issue with a blank image can occur is if you minimize the window, or bring another window on top of the one for which you are taking the image, prior to the image having been completed. I have done this myself a few times, that is why I know it is possible.

Yeah it still keeps happening. If I save a single chart it works ok. When I try to save the Main Window it creates the blank file. Have rebooted and no change.

Note this happens ONLY while using Copy 2 of SC. On the main installation (Copy 1) it does work as it should. Is this how you tested it?
