I shut down SC (version 2168) yesterday and when I started it today none of my chartbooks would open. I've shut down and restarted this version before with no issues. Now if I open any of my chartbooks in File/Open Chartbook I get this in the message log:

The Chartbook file requires a newer version of Sierra Chart or is not a valid Chartbook. File: C:\SierraChart\Data\NQ.cht | 2020-09-25 10:46:10.858 *

We have heard about this in a small number of other cases, and in order for us to get closer to understanding why this happens, we need you to provide us that particular Chartbook file.

You can attach it here privately. Instructions:

After you provide us that file, then follow the instructions here to use one of your backup Chartbooks:

That file just consists of nothing more than zeros. That is going to be an operating system level issue on your side to have a result like that.

There is no possibility of this being an issue on the Sierra Chart side. We have rarely but sometimes seen problems like this involving files, for the last 15 years or so. It is rare but sometimes it happens.

When you had closed Sierra Chart at the time this happened, were you also shutting down your computer system? Not sure why that would matter but just trying to understand how this occurs. Are you running any kind of Antivirus/anti-malware software on your system?

Yes I think I was rebooting my pc at the time this happened. I do have Avast anti-virus but it's never flagged a Sierra Chart file before nor were there any notifications that it produced during the shutdown/restart.

I have twice daily backups so I've restored the chartbook files from just before this issue cropped up and everything is working.

This must have been an operating system level issue. The operating system did not handle the file writing properly.

Clearly Windows cannot be trusted with completing file writing, when the system is being shut down.

Although we have never seen an issue like this ever ourselves.
