my defaults were changed

I turned SC on earlier this morning, everything normal, EVERYTHING just as it should be, then turned SC off an hour or so later. Couple of hours after that I turned SC back on, and things were totally different, I lost my defaults during those intervening 2 hours. The 5 charts that use global settings were now black background, florescent colored bars, bright white grid lines and numbers, the 8 charts that do not have the "use global settings" box checked were all normal, just the way they're supposed to be. My right click menus are now all totally different. Instead of my 10 specifically chosen control bar buttons, I now have 30 or so useless (to me anyway) buttons in my control bar. And now I have 2 new horizontal ribbons that destroy the vertical balance that is required when using 1 chartbook to cover 2 monitors, the one at the top has the name of the chart book, the ribbon on the bottom lists every single chart in the chart book. When I uncheck the "use global settings" box, these 5 black charts with florescent bars return to their normal colors and fonts, but that's not correcting the real problem. The real problem is my defaults were overwritten, how do I keep that from ever happening again? When I first turned SC on this morning I was using version 1853, when I turned SC back on 2 hours later it was still version 1853, I have since installed version 1910 and that didn't change anything.
