Hi Support,

I am currently trying to help one of our trader set up Sierra Chart within our corporate environment.
However when I login, it returns an error prompt:
"HTTP Error: HTTP request #9 returned the following error: Windows error code 12029: A connection with the server could not be established"

I have set up the proxy address within the login box but I'll like to check if we need to open other ports within our firewall to resolve the above error.
Please advise.

In the Proxy frame of the Sierra Chart Login window, did you specify both a port number and an address? Although usually the Address is not needed. It relies on the proxy server configuration in Internet Explorer. You just need to make certain you are using the correct Port number in the Proxy Port number box.

On the computer you are trying to log in from, are you able to browse the Internet using Internet Explorer?

Yes I was able to access the Internet using IE.
Using the same proxy settings, I entered both the Address and Port number.

Try leaving the Proxy Address box blank and only enter the Proxy Port number. The port number is the only port that needs to be open on the network.

Tried leaving the Address blank.
Now the error message is "Timeout error. There was no response"

Apologies if this is obvious, but are you certain of the port number used for the proxy server and did you enter that. As long as you can browse the Internet with Internet Explorer, there definitely should be a way in by properly setting the Proxy Address and Proxy Port number. Usually the Address should be left blank.

Yes I am pretty sure. I checked my the proxy used via Internet Properties > Local Area Network (LAN) settings.

And I am sure that I can browse the Web with my IE using the same settings.

What else can I check?

Ok thanks. But before we go down that line, can you check with your next level of technical support if they know something about which ports we need to open in our firewall?
Because even if you remote in, you can only see proxy settings and what we entered in our login screen,
so if you know what else to check please let me know.
I can do some print screens if needed to.

You are dealing with the senior engineers here. There is no one else. The ports you fully control. The default web browsing port is 80 and that is what is used for login by default. However, if you are using a proxy Web server, the Sierra Chart login will go through that proxy server and you specify the port number.

However, as we are looking at the code, we do see a potential issue depending upon the port number you are using. Please let us know what the port number is. If you can show us screen images, of all of the proxy related settings in Internet Explorer, that will help us.

Once you get past the Sierra Chart login, then the next question is what Data or Trading service are you using? The ports used for that will depend upon the Service being used.

We apologize for the delay with this. We have reviewed our code, and looked at the port numbers being used. And looked at all of the different settings you have tried. We cannot see why there would be a problem.

The only other thing we wonder is whether there is some third-party firewall software running on the computer blocking the connection?

We are still thinking about how best to troubleshoot this issue.

Thank you for your patience with this. If you need additional time extension just let us know. We are going to make a couple of changes, not anything that would seem to make a difference but we are going to reorganize the code a little when using a proxy server.

Hi Support,

You mentioned "and looked at the port numbers being used", can you let me know the entire list of ports used so I can check on my end.

Also yes, please help me to do a time extension. Thanks.

We were just looking at the port numbers you are using. As we said, it is what you specify in the Port number box which control Port being used. We passed that port number to the Windows HTTP functions and it makes the connection over the proxy.

I am not a network person. Can you advise me where to check this?
I checked within the proxy settings in my browser, only HTTP is used (see my 2nd image attached previously).

We can see that you are not using the Socks proxy. Please update to the latest release of Sierra Chart. This is 964.

Set the Proxy Address and the Port, both need to be set, to what you show in this image:
https://www.sierrachart.com/Download.php?Folder=SupportBoard&download=228

If you still have difficulty, the disable the Windows firewall and see if that helps. If you are running any other firewall on the computer, then temporarily disable it.

Thank you for your patience. We definitely should be able to get this working one way or another.

Could you let us know if you are able to successfully log into Sierra Chart using 964 or higher now using a proxy?

I have asked my engineer to disable both the windows and corporate firewall for our test machine.
I am able to login now but we are trying to determine at which point was it blocked.
Will revert if I have any findings.

Hi,

We managed to login without a proxy settings and after setting a rule for our test machine to access Internet directly.
My network engineer wants to know the IP address of the destination for the Sierra Chart connection so that he can further refine the firewall rule. Are you able to advise on this?
Thanks.

The log in to Sierra Chart goes through the Sierra Chart Web server. It is the IP address for www.SierraChart.com. If you just give them this domain name, then they can determine the IP.

The next question is what Data or Trading service will you be using Sierra Chart with, and that will have different IP addresses and port numbers.
