is it possible to transpose an alert condition programmed in one chart in a chartbook to another chart? Can they be linked like the studies? or be copied from one chart to another? if so are there criterion to be met? Must the charts be similar in nature? Or do the alert conditions need to be programmed in to each chart?

You cannot do this across Chartbook's but you can do it within the same Chartbook by using Chart Linking and linking the Chart Studies:

When I link my two charts nothing happens. Do the charts need to be similar in nature?

No they do not have to be similar, make sure they have the same Link Number and both should also have the Studies linking option enabled as well. Refer to:
Chart Settings: Chart Linking (Chart >> Chart Settings >> Linking menu)

So when you change studies on either of the charts, including the alert condition, those changes will be applied to the other charts.
