Hi there, I want to use two SC copies on the one machine [so I can use virtual desktops] however both copies keep on 'toggling' between being connected ie one connects then the other disconnects every minute and then back again?

Can you please help, thx Mark

This is a limitation of the particular Data or Trading service you are connected to. We see you are using CQG. So this is a limitation of CQG.

What you need to do is use one copy of Sierra Chart as a server and another one as the client. Refer to this page:

Hi thx for that, sorry I should have been more specific of what I need to achieve.

I want to view 12 charts via 2 virtual desktops. I have made good progress with 2 copies of SCs opening one on to each desktop ie everything works ok except as I say the CQG connection only allows for one, and I take your point.

In that case can I achieve what I want connecting to SCs default data ?

Rgds, Mark

..thankyou but not being a technical type, can you please assist me :-) as I am not sure I'm am achieving my goal of having a second copy open on a another virtual desktop. I have opened a New Instance ok as you can see:

https://www.screencast.com/t/mMD1seRld1

..however I'm not sure what the instructions mean. Can you please help?

Also how will I be able to open this New Instance copy on a new [virtual] desktop? Is there a separate icon I can click on to start up independently ?

Thanks for your help :-)

Rgds, Mark

The first thing we want you to do is to go through the step-by-step instructions here again because we did a few updates to address the confusion:

Using DTC Server for Data and Trading in Another Sierra Chart Instance: Using DTC Server for Data and Trading in Another Sierra Chart Instance

Reload the page for the latest content.

In your case, you do not want to use the File >> New Instance command.

In the image you provided, the particular instance of Sierra Chart you are running is considered the client instance. And therefore do not enable the DTC Protocol Server in that instance. It must be disabled.

..ok getting there, but still some conflict. The progress I made I got to 2 copies of SCs working with what appeared to be:

[1] Server instance of Sierra Chart, and [original copy on virtual desktop 1]

[2] another instance of Sierra Chart [second copy on virtual desktop 2]

Both SC copies if opened separately appeared to be reading from it's own Data folder. However with both instances open and accessing the same Chartbook they somehow appeared to be access the same file. I could tell there was a problem when I opened the same Chartbook in both the original and second SC copy the program was very slow. Also if I made changes in one and saved, the changes occurred in the second. Therefore they seemed to be sharing data folders.

What I want is multiple copies of SCs all operating their own data independently, yet sharing the same data feed and trading abilities.

Can you please identify where I am going wrong and what I need to do to get this result?

Admittedly I was a bit confused as to what you meant by:

In your case, you do not want to use the File >> New Instance command.

In the image you provided, the particular instance of Sierra Chart you are running is considered the client instance. And therefore do not enable the DTC Protocol Server in that instance. It must be disabled.

To me that seems to imply I use neither option. Very sorry to get confused and have to have all the spelt out and I appreciate your help.

Thanks and Rgds, Mark

Make sure the Data Folders are different. They must be. Refer to:
General Settings Window: Data Files Folder (Global Settings >> General Settings >> Paths >> Files and Folder Paths)

This setting is in Global Settings >> General Settings >> General 1

For the performance issue, refer to help topic 30:

..thx when you say:

"Make sure the Data Folders are different. They must be. Refer to"

..do you mean called another name? ie Data1 and Data2. Or simply two different folders in different locations both called Data? I have done the later

As long as the Global Settings >> General Settings >> General 1 >>Data Files Folder paths are different that is what matters. They just need to be different in some way.

What you have done will be fine.

..great I'm making progress thanks :-)

..however in the Message Log as you will see from the attached the listening port is not starting and I am unsure where to find the problem. I have attached 2 images of both my Server Instance and Client Instance, if you could kindly review my settings.

..I would be grateful if you could please advice where I might be going wrong, thankyou

..also so far I have 1 x Client Instance and hoping to add 2 more, can I do this by simply copying the same setup process for the subsequent 2,3 Client Instances as I did for the first?

Thanks and regards, Mark

..further just checking you see no problem with this; I was running very low on space on my C: HHD where my Serve Instance is located so I have to place my Client Instance[s] on another drive, and appears ok but would like to check with you.

..again thanks so much for your help :-)

..sorry to ask yet another question, as you can see from the attached image I have a number of Chart Drawings copying through to the one Chart. This works fine on the Server Instance [shown in the image], however no matter what I try on any of the Client Instances only one other chart comes through instead of multi charts as expected. I can change chart numbers and they are copied individually, however never more than one Chart copy.

Wondering if it has something to do with Server / Client Instance relationship?

Many thanks, regards, Mark

Hi there, I seem to have resolved the 'listening port is not starting' conflict by disabling DTC Protocol Server on all the client copies.

However can you please attend to the previous [last] 2 questions re locations and chart copying? thanks :-)

Yes use the same procedure.

Yes this will be no problem.

Regarding post #13, we will need a Chartbook consisting of no more than three charts, which demonstrates this. Here are instructions to attach:
https://www.sierrachart.com/index.php?page=PostingInformation.php#AttachFile

We will not accept a chart consisting of more than 3 to 4 charts. Otherwise, it will be disregarded.

Hi there, I have made up a Chartbook that demonstrates perfectly what the problem is. This chart has been made up in my second copy of SCs and only copies one copy of a chart despite 'requesting' 2 charts to copy. Please seen attached image that show what I mean.
