Data sharing is not possible with sub instances. There are way too many complications. We do plan to improve upon how historical data is downloaded from one instance to another in order to support a full re-download from a sub instance and triggering a full re-download in the main instance. Also 40 gigabytes of data will be compressed much smaller and the data is compressed. So it is not actually occupying that much space.
