Thank you. I have finally figured out why my alerts never work. It was simply because by default I had my extending rectangles set as DOUBLE EXTEND. This meant that Sierra believed that the alert criteria had already triggered (in the past) so it would not trigger again. It's a shame as I prefer the visual appearance of the "band" given by double extend but at least I now know how to trigger a rectangle alert
