Is this from one of the spreadsheet studies, or is this a "standard" spreadsheet (opened by selecting "File >> New Spreadsheet"), or is this a Quote Spreadsheet? It sounds like you opened the spreadsheet as a Quote Spreadsheet as what you state about the symbol repeating in Column B, is how the Quote Spreadsheet works.
