This feature has definitely NOT been removed. It is still there and functioning. We use it every day ourselves. Check to see if the option Global Settings >> Tool Settings >> Support Drag for Drawing Creation/Modification has been turned on (selected). When this option is selected, then if you click down and drag your pointer prior to letting up on the button, then it will interpret that as the drawing.
