I've also gone through help topic 30. my data files have never been compressed, but i was not seeing a tremendous processor load (7-8%) during this latency. So although my data files appear to be large (some 1.2GB), their size doesn't appear to be affecting CPU usage.

How big is too big for these data files? I will compress them if I need to, but I'd like to know what "too big" is?

This is not a problem at all. This does not cause any kind of real-time data latency issues. There is no need to do any compression. Compression only helps when the chart data is being loaded from the data file.
