I'm considering configuring SC to use the same data directory for all instances and install to conserve storage space. By default, SC uses separate directories for each instance and install. Are there any potential issues on the SC side if I implement this change?

Yes major issues doing that. There absolutely will be conflicts and historical market data issues. This absolutely cannot be done at all.

Can chart files (*.cht) be stored in a single directory?

These are called Chartbook files.

They could be in a single folder, but the problem is if you are using the same Chartbook in different instances, then one is going to overwrite the other and we would strongly recommend against this. Do this at your own risk.

We would never recommend this at all to anyone.
