How to display the Trade Only Symbol?

I use the Trade Only Symbol sometimes so I can trade micros based on the mini symbol. Trouble is sometimes I forget that I'm still set to micros like when I fire up the next day for example. I would like to be able to display my symbol on the chart if there is something entered as the trade only symbol. But the Symbol Display study appears to only support the primary symbol.

Is there any way to capture or display the value entered as a Trade Only Symbol?

I solved this by extracting the value from cell A1 in a spreadsheet. Seems to be the only way that I can see other than maybe diving into ACSIL, but this works great for my needs.

This was something that was easy for us to do, so we have added an option to the Symbol Display study for Also Display Trade and Current Quote Symbol. This will just add a space and then the Trade and Current Quote Symbol is shown.

Note that if you use the Description, it still will only show the symbol for the Trade and Current Quote Symbol, as the description for that symbol is not readily available within ACSIL.

You will find this change in the next Pre-Release (v. 2264).

Oh wonderful!! Much better than my solution even though it ultimately worked. Now if you could just add symbol linking that links the trade-only symbol too... =D

There is some ability to change the Trade and Current Quote Symbol when changing symbols. In particular, if you have the Trade and Current Quote Symbol set in the Symbol Settings, then it will update that field. Refer to the Trade and Current Quote Symbol in this section:
Global Symbol Settings: Symbol Settings

Also note the link to another setting to clear the field on a change.

Thanks but setting the trade only symbol in the symbol settings, just won't cut it. I swap between ES and MES as needed depending on the market behavior, volatility, my own risk tolerance, etc. Ideally if I put a trade only symbol in the chart settings, it would simply link if any other symbol was symbol linked to that chart. This doesn't seem to be possible at all as far as I can tell. If I'm mistaken, please point me in the right direction (again, not talking about changing the overall symbol settings).

What you are asking for is not supported.

I am curious as to how exactly you would want it to work. How would the system determine the appropriate symbol to use for the Trade and Current Quote Symbol when changing the symbol of the chart?

I would expect it to work the same as symbol linking. If the main symbol on Chart #1 is ES, and it is symbol linked to chart #2, then if I put in a trade-only symbol for chart #1, chart #2 would inherit that trade-only symbol. No different than if I changed the main symbol of chart #1 to MES when it was symbol linked with chart #2.

So today I noticed something I could swear is new! A TradeQuote Symbol checkbox in the linking settings. Is this new or did I somehow miss it before?? If it's new, THANK YOU!! It has already made a huge improvement to my workflow. And if it's not new... well then I'm a doofus. LOL

It looks like it has been in there for about 6 months, but quite honestly, I had forgotten about the change myself. I'm glad you found it.

Hi again John,

So I've bumped into an issue with the trade-only symbol. Spreadsheets apparently don't pick up on it. So while I have a sheet that is using the MES as the trade-only symbol, the tick value it's getting (J56) is 12.50, the mini tick value.

I would think that spreadsheets should always pick up whatever is being used as the trade/quote symbol, no? Hoping this can get addressed as I rely on spreadsheets quite a lot and while I can work around this, it's definitely sub-optimal. Thanks!

The Spreadsheet is going to just use the data that is in the chart for the Currency Value per Tick. In other words, whatever is set in Chart >> Chart Settings >> Advanced Settings 2 >> Currency Value per Tick is what is going to show in the Spreadsheet.

Right and that's a problem, because if I enable the trade-only symbol for the chart, then my spreadsheet is using the wrong tick value. It needs to follow the trade-only symbol, if enabled.

HELLO,
I HAVE A QUESTION IN THIS OCCASION AS WELL - I DID PUT "SYMBOL" AS MINI CME AND I PUT "QUOTE AND TRADE SYMBOL" AS MICRO BUT WHEN I WAS MAKING A TRADE POSITION WAS IN MINI AND NOT IN MICRO. I EVEN CHECKED THE BUTTON "FOR TRADE ONLY" AND THE SAME THING AGAIN. AM I MISSING SOMETHING? SHOULDN'T BE THE SECONDARY SYMBOL WHAT GOES FOR EXECUTION WHILE THE MAIN SYMBOL PLOTS THE CHART ETC?
ANY KNOWLEDGE IN THIS REGARD APPRECIATED.
THANKS

I use this feature regularly and haven't had a problem. I use mini as the main symbol, micro as the trade-only symbol, and check "use as trade-only symbol". If you're sure those are all enabled... then I'm not sure what might be happening in your case. Maybe someone else can suggest something.

Thanks for posting. I'm not sure but I think it worked once before with totally different trading service from what using now. Probably some small detail as usually it is...

While in a trade it showed mini like performance and also after the trade 10x of the number BUT good news is I logged in directly to my broker acc and it shows correct micro instrument was used. So it is a bug or something like it, will confirm tomorrow.

We are not sure what you are referring to in terms of "Trade was in Mini and not Micro". What exactly gave you this impression?

The one thing we think may be the case is the Currency Value per Tick. Refer to the following information to ensure that you are getting the right P&L for the trade symbol:
Chart Settings: Updating Currency Value per Tick for Trade Symbol

Hello SC,
I did the trades in couple of instruments but for example Russell Micro gave me correct position value calculations -- on the other hand NASDAQ Micro giving me calculation like it is E-Mini instrument instead BUT in reality in the background it is Micro -- so something isn't quite right with all instruments there. Because I know this now I can handle it but still it is little uncomfortable to see the bigger numbers there..
Thanks
