That is an ARM processor. We are going to support ARM processors in Sierra Chart. We will try to get this task done soon.

Has this been completed?

Same with CodeWeavers Crossover?

Not necessarily, Crossover does support running Intel applications on M1, but I don't know if SC has been tested. Definitely worth a try.

Does SC need the ARM support for Crossover also?

I am looking to buy a new iMac and wondering if I will be able to run Sierra Charts on it.

Thanks

We have partially completed support for this, but a full release, is a very involved task with many details and we have not been able to allocate the time to it.

Does this need to be completed for CodeWeaver Crossover to work with Sierra Chart? I would rather go that route anyway.

Thanks

From CodeWeaver:

Sierra Chart runs 'well' in CrossOver v.20.0.4 which runs on the M1 Mac (see: https://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/crossover/sierra-chart#cxmac). Install the trial version of CrossOver, select 'INSTALL WINDOWS APPLICATION', and you should be able to test accordingly. Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns. My very best regards.

Sierra Chart being compiled for ARM 'just' means that it will run on Windows devices with ARM processors, e.g. Surface Pro X. It does not mean that it will run on Apple Silicon machines natively.

Today, you cannot easily or satisfactorily run Windows (the OS) on an Apple Silicon machine. It is possible to use the Windows ARM insider preview on a Parallels VM on these Apple devices and there is some open source activity going on - again with the ARM edition of Windows (which is insider preview only - you cannot today buy a retail license of ARM Windows). If these approaches worked well (and they are in the realms of geeky/hacking, not production) then an ARM-compiled version of Sierra Chart may run in this virtualised environment. Not a recommended approach for a critical task like trading.

CrossOver is a Mac app (available for Intel and ARM Macs) which is a commercial version of the Wine project that enables some Windows applications to run on non-Windows machines. It translates calls to Windows operating system functions into the native functions of the machine upon which CrossOver (or Wine) is running. A few people here have had success using Sierra Chart with CrossOver on Apple Silicon Macs.

TLDR; An ARM-compiled version of Sierra Chart has nothing to do with running Sierra Chart on Apple Silicon machines. It will be a welcome development however as:
- there will be more and more ARM processor Windows devices
- it is conceivable that ARM Windows will be licensable and able to be virtualised under e.g. Parallels on Apple Silicon machines and then an ARM-compiled Sierra Chart should be able to run in this virtualised environment.

So you are saying a few people here are successfully running Sierra chart on the new Apple M1 processors using Crossover?

I’m currently running Sierra chart on my 2015 iMac with Parallels but considering getting a new Mac and want to be sure I can run SC with Crossover or Parallels before purchasing.

I’m not a tech geek as you can tell! 😂

Thanks

Yes but I can't name them explicitly! If I were you and looking for confirmation directly I would open a User Discussion post asking "If you are running SC under CrossOver on an Apple Silicon Mac, please post here".

Thank you for the information binaryduke it's nice to talk to someone who understands this as I certainly don't. I notice that parallels now offers compatibility with the M1 chip. Does this mean that the licensing issues you describe above has been resolved and it is likely that SC will run on the new M1 chip? I have ordered a new M1 chip and never considered that this would be a problem. Thank you

You might not need M1, I have a 2015 iMac too, running Linux Mint+Wine since 2018, CPU usage
of Sierra stays around 4% to 5%

I assume I could run Linux Mint with Parallels for M1 too, but I have to monthly fee for using Parallels now
