I am trying to make Sierra Charts portable by loading the software and applicable Data files on to a flashdrive. I recently did an update of the Sierra Charts software and began receiving Error messages about disk size. I am using a 32gb flashdrive and only have 5 currency pairs in the Data folder. How large a flashdrive should I be using? Many Thanks

You are able to answer better than we can. It depends upon the size of your data files. Those are going to be in the data subfolder in the folder where Sierra Chart is installed.

The flashdrive is 32gb in size with 11.7gb used space and 17.7gb of free space. I only have Sierra Charts folder (Data folder included) on this flashdrive along with a very, very small Excel file. The Excel filer is separate from the Sierra folder. The Data folder within the Sierra Charts folder is 11.6gb in size. I am trying to reload the Sierra Charts program (initial Sierra Charts startup) along with my currency pairs (Data folder) again and the two currency pairs (GBPJPY & EURJPY) that I have been having a problem with, for some time now, on the charts, are receiving an error message - see below.

Error writing intraday data file record.
Error writing intraday data.
Error writing record to the file E:\sierra charts\data\GBPJPY.scid & EURJPY.scid.
Windows error code 112:
There is not enough space on the disk.

I started out having a problem with GBPJPY and EURJPY in that the last entry (hard right edge) would stop at 7-5-2013 (GBPJPY) and 5-23-2013 (EURJPY) and not at the current date of 11-25-2013 as the other currency pair charts exhibit. Now I am getting this error message and the program appears to be locked. I have reloaded the program numerous times and have even started from scratch regarding the 2 problem currency pairs, but with no success. each time the outcome is the same, but only with those 2 currency pairs - GBPJPY & EURJPY. Please advise.

Do you have the Global Settings >> General Settings >> Data Files Folder set correctly?

The GBPJPY.scid and the EURJPY.scid files are each 4gb in size. The other 4 or 5 currency pair files are about 1.6gb and smaller (145mb). Hope this helps.

Other than what we said in post 5, we do not see how we can help this problem. You are getting an error from the operating system indicating there is not enough disk space. What are we to do about that?.

This is something for you to resolve.

Richard, I'd suggest making sure that your flashdrive is not formatted as FAT32 as there is a file size limit of roughly 4GB using this file system. NTFS formatting doesn't have this barrier.

Support's above response indicates that SC might be able to open & write files >4GB despite it being a 32-bit application ?

Again, the flasdrive is 32gb with 17.7gb of free space and I am getting a not enough space on disk message. So as I understand it, when Sierra Charts is loading, it is utilizing more that 17.7gb to load 11.7gb of data. Does this make sense?

IS your flash drive formatted as FAT32 or NTFS ?

I'm interested to know if SierraChart can read and write these files above 4GB. (note; it's impossible for *any* application to to read or write files above 4GB on a FAT32 partition.)

I hope you will keep the thread updated after using a NTFS partition. (backup your data first!).

Good question, Richard. For example; I see a single 440MB file in a cache folder on my SC install.

After you have loaded Sierra Chart and start to get errors,.. Do you have any free space on your drive as indicated by Windows Explorer ?

(perhaps it's better to do this test after changing over to NTFS)

This is a CTS T4 cache file. Not ours.

Everything is fixed with the re-formatting from FAT32 to NTFS. Program and charts are working great. Many Thanks
