Keyboard Shortcut to Change Symbol Goes to Wrong Month

Using CTS, if I type in the first two letters of the symbol to change the chart, ie 'CL', 'NQ', 'GC', etc this works but it always defaults to and loads an old expired month. Can it be set to default to the current front month contract with highest volume?

No. This is not supported. You will need to type a more specific symbol.

It is not a useful 'shortcut' to type out something as long as 6E.20180300.CME_Eq to CL.20180200.CME_NY and remember off the top of one's head which is the exact current front month for each symbol and the additional letters after each, since just '6E' already works to get the correct symbol, it would be useful to load the front month, please consider it, thanks.

This is not something we would consider. The proper solution is to use the Associated Watch List which can also be added to the Control Bar, and add the symbols you want to use to that list.
