chart linking using last linked chart settings?

here is the context. i have 5 charts linked to #1 and have them all linked by symbol. i have another chart that was not linked to anything that has a different symbol. if i change that single chart to link to #1 and use the symbol option, it changes all of the other 5 charts symbol to this charts symbol. that seems backwards in that it should take on the linking properties of the group of 5 linked charts.

when it is done this way and i want to add a chart to group of linked charts all of the already linked up charts take on the single charts properties and then i have to change it all back afterwards. am i missing something here?

How this works is documented here:

If it does not work as you want, then do not use this functionality. It will not change. It is already properly designed.

ive read that and the docs say nothing about which chart sets the link. does a group of 5 already linked charts inherit the properties of a single chart that is newly linked to that group or does the single, newly linked chart inherit the properties of the 5 linked charts that are already established. it seems the current way is the latter and makes for extra steps and chart loading/recalculating. its backwards.

It is neither. There is no such thing as inheriting in this case.

Here is the relevant documentation for Symbol:

Symbol: When the symbol of a chart is changed, the symbol of other linked charts using this option will change to match.

i read that as well and makes perfect sense, but that is assuming you are making the symbol change on a chart that is already linked and not a chart being added to an already established linked group.
