Looking for a Particular Volume Indicator ?

I've had a look over the various volume indicators available but couldn't quite find what I was looking for. Hoping this is available ?

Im looking for an indicator that displays the volume traded for the chart time period just like the normal volume histogram. Difference being that each bar displays the average volume for that time slot as compared to the last X number of days specified. Eg. If I have a 5 Min chart and I specify 10 days for the indicator, then it would tally up the volume for the last 10 days for each time slot (930-935, 935-940..) and display the averages of that.

This is different to the relative volume currently available.

This is something we have been asked about many times. We have been planning to add a study that does this but just have not gotten to it yet.

Not sure though if exactly what is being asked here is exactly the same as what other requests are. But definitely similar.

Yes, I have seen a few of the other threads where references have been made calling it Volume Breakdown etc because that's the name Investor RT has given it which wasn't very helpful and doesn't make much sense. If I could name it, it would be something like a Relative Volume Per Bar study. SC already has a delta per bar study.

Probably only needs one input setting specifying the look back period which would be in days anyway i presume because you can only have one unique time slot per day. So if I input 10 and have a 5 Min chart, then each bar in the study would display the average volume for the last 10 days for each time slot exactly like the standard volume indicator. And changing chart time frame wouldn't matter. If I change to 15 min chart, then it would just display the average volume for each 15 min period over X days.

This can be a powerful tool if used in conjunction with other tools etc and there's an obvious demand for it as you stated. Probably one of the only things that platforms like Investor RT has an edge over. I say its time to bump this up the priority list, build the study, market it out and see them lose customers lol !

In seriousness, hopefully you get around to this one esp if its not a complicated build.

Will look out for it in eagerness !!

In the next version there will be a new study: Relative Volume

This study calculates the relative bar and cumulative volume per time period based on previous days time periods.

Al,

You need to do it vs a variable lookback period ( 1,2,3 ... to all days on the chart) that is user selected.

I did one of these and I think I put it on the board a while back but the ease of varying the lookback is likely to be quite important to your users. Watch out for half day holidays like we have for HSI or your averages are messed up. I kept a count of non-zero volumes as my proxy for holidays but I suspect you could do better.

When it is available, you will see that it has a programmable period and a number of other options.

great work.. study works as expected..

one question.. is it possible to represent the value of relative volume bars in real terms instead of a percentage ie. the calculated value would show the avg. actual number of contracts traded for that bar. You can then overlay this histogram over the standard volume study and visually be able to see what the actual volume being traded now is vs the average for that period. This might be more helpful than just seeing a few bars spike a few hundred % as it is currently.

the cumulative volume ratio is spot on though and the ability to exclude holidays is great. love it.
