The $VIX symbol is a Sierra Chart symbol. Not an Interactive Brokers symbol. For the IB index symbols you need to look in File >> Find Symbol >> IB Indexes. For VIX-201512-CFE-USD-1000 you will need to specify the expiration day as well in the symbol. So the format will be: VIX-201512##-CFE-USD-1000, where ## is the expiration day. You should be able to find this by searching for the symbol in Trader Workstation.
