It sounds like those chartbooks are just too old and are not compatible with the current version. Check your Message Log after you try to open one of them and see if you have a message saying something like 'chartbook is not compatible'. If you do get this, then you can try to recover the chartbook by following the instructions at the following link:
Chartbooks (Workspaces): Opening Older Chartbooks

But, depending on how old the chartbooks are, you may not be able to recover them.
