Yes, you will get better performance by using the D: drive. (provided that both C:\ and D:\ are on similar drives) An NVME m2 drive is going to be much faster than a SATA SSD: https://www.pcworld.com/article/2899351/storage/everything-you-need-to-know-about-nvme.html Note that not all m2 drives are going to be nvme.
