Support Board

I have had Sierra for several years and cannot seem to make the horizontal line work properly and keep the numbers attached to it.
Have Sierra through Infinity Transact.
Every time I use the horizontal line, the end of the line goes all the way to the edge of the page and when I cut the line to be shorter, the number disappers.
I am looking for a short line with a number by it or under it that I can use in the middle of a chart for reference purposes.
There must be a way, I have just tried for a long time to figure it out and haven't been able to do so yet.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
