Study subregions

At one time if you had 1 study in a subregion and hid that study the entire region would be hidden and the main or additional regions would become larger. Now the hidden study region space is visible/maintained even though nothing is displayed. Is this intentional? If so the old method was more user friendly/practical...unless it created a performance hit.
