Dear Support,

I’d like to kindly request a review and correction of how the Point and Figure Bar Period Type and Point and Figure Study currently handle 1-box reversals.

Both the bar type and the study (even when “Allow 1-Box Reversals” is enabled) appear to construct 1-box reversal charts incorrectly. Specifically, they always start a new column on every 1-box reversal, instead of allowing the one-step-back condition where an X and an O can legitimately appear in the same column.

According to Jeremy du Plessis’ The Definitive Guide to Point and Figure, pages 30–34, the correct 1-box reversal construction requires that:

“When price reverses by one box only and then reverses again in the opposite direction, the new X or O is plotted in the same column, not a new one. This is the one-step-back principle.”

This rule allows 1-box reversal charts to display the correct structure and congestion width, as opposed to the always-new-column behavior currently seen in Sierra Chart.

I’ve attached:

- A short reference extract (PDF) from the above book describing the correct construction method.
- A comparison screenshot showing:

1. Sierra Chart Point and Figure Bar Period Type (upper chart) and Point and Figure Study (lower chart) using 2-tick box size and 1-box reversal — both incorrectly form new columns every reversal (the study also incorrectly displays the same Xs or Os in new columns).
2. A reference chart from another platform implementing the proper 1-box reversal with one-step-back (for illustration only - they implemented the one-step-back feature based on my request relatively recently, but since they do not allow tick based PnF construction, their charts are inherently flawed).

It would be greatly appreciated if this correct one-step-back logic could be implemented in Sierra’s Point and Figure Bar Period Type (and optionally in the study as well). This would make Sierra’s 1-box reversal charts fully align with the traditional construction method described in du Plessis’ work.

Thank you very much for your time and for considering this improvement.

I fully support this request. It‘s a very well-explained and valuable suggestion.
Correctly implementing the one-step-back logic would make Sierra’s 1-box reversal charts truly align with classical Point & Figure principles.
Many thanks to the Sierra team for considering it. This would be a great enhancement for all P&F users.

This is inherently going to be difficult to do. It is not something we are going to be looking at any time soon. There are just too many complications with doing something like this.

Displaying, both an X an O in the same column.
“When price reverses by one box only and then reverses again in the opposite direction, the new X or O is plotted in the same column, not a new one. This is the one-step-back principle.”

We just are not interested in getting involved in this. We are being honest. We really have no interest to get involved in this at all. We have too many other priorities. Please create your own chart bars:
ACSIL Interface - Custom Chart Bars

So our decision is, we are not going to be looking at this at all. Besides we would never get to this until five years from now. It is pointless even asking us for anything new at this point.
