What a disaster. A situation in which the local nature of SC is a disadvantage vs some of the competing server based offerings, nothing lost there, was able to immediately be running on IBKR TWS side on another machine, and using Tradingview charts in a pinch. Reminder to back up your data....

1. What OS and specific version does SC recommend as most stable and reliable for a professional production trading machine?

2. Is an older Windows version viable, considering new multi core processor/gpu/driver/battery management in a mobile workstation, etc?

3. How can all the bloat and telemetry and surveillance processes be permanently disabled?

4. How can forced updates be permanently disabled?

5. How else can major system failure/downtime like this be definitively avoided?

We would recommend using Windows Server operating systems:

1. What OS and specific version does SC recommend as most stable and reliable for a professional production trading machine?

On our systems we mostly use Windows Server 2016. You can get a license for this on eBay for about $35 or so.

You will not get any forced updates with Windows Server 2016 if you configure it to just prompt for updates. It is not going to do any updates automatically.

You should not have lost anything with Sierra Chart. All of the data and configuration files will be contained in your Sierra Chart installation folder. Does not make sense, that a Windows update would have caused an issue with the storage drive.

a little bit off topic, I have been running Sierra with Linux since 2019, never had one single issue, I also had TWS until 2022, it has Linux version, it didn't have any problems communicating with Sierra either (with TWS API), and I never have to deal with Windows crap.

What is your linux setup? Do you just simply run Sierra Chart with WINE? I would love a native linux version or even BSD, Windows is just getting too painful to use.

Yes we fully agree:
Windows is just getting too painful to use.

It is no longer a serious or viable software operating system platform.

@User697966
simply with WINE, I am keeping forgetting that Sierra Chart is NOT a Linux native program (from installation to daily use)

1. What OS and specific version does SC recommend as most stable and reliable for a professional production trading machine?

As mentioned, SC doesn't recommend Windows 11, but Windows Server 2016. It is similar in look and feel to Windows 10 Pro. It is more work to administer. It goes end of extended support in Jan 2027.

If you are considering Windows 10, you may have heard that support ends next month. However, you can pay for a year of extended support.

2. Is an older Windows version viable, considering new multi core processor/gpu/driver/battery management in a mobile workstation, etc?

Check the specs on the different Windows Server 2016 versions should you go that route. For example, the "Essential" version supports only two cores. Client Access Licenses are also required with Windows Server. Finally, will you need special GPU drivers or will the generic drivers be OK? If you have a laptop, it was probably designed after 2016, so there may be hardware that is not supported by the 10 year old OS. (USB-C is one example I can think of.)

3. How can all the bloat and telemetry and surveillance processes be permanently disabled?

Telemetry is disabled in Settings>>Privacy & Security>>Diagnostics & Feedback

Chris Titus goes into detail about debloating. https://christitus.com/windows-11-perfect-install/

4. How can forced updates be permanently disabled?

Steve Gibson has a tool that locks updates called In Control: https://www.grc.com/incontrol.htm

5. How else can major system failure/downtime like this be definitively avoided?

If your SSD was corrupted from the update, then you are not alone: https://mashable.com/article/microsoft-denies-windows-11-update-bricking-ssds

Also:
1. Make backups
2. Make offline backups of backups
3. Create a Windows Restore USB drive
