Window, CB and CW Menus

CB Menu

CB stands for Chartbook.

This menu lists all of the open Chartbooks. Select a Chartbook name from the list to activate that Chartbook.

CW Menu

The CW (Child Window or Chart Window) menu lists all of the Chart Windows and Spreadsheet Windows currently visible. Detached Chart and Spreadsheet Windows are also listed on the CW menu.

Chart Windows which are part of the the visible Chartbook but hidden are also listed.

Select a window name from this list to switch to that window. If a window is hidden, it will become visible when selecting it from this menu. This window does not display chart windows which are part of a Chartbook which is open but not currently active and visible Chartbook.

Window Menu

This section documents all of the available Window menu commands

Cascade (Window)

This command arranges all of the child windows which are part of the main Sierra Chart window in a cascade layout.

Tile Horizontally (Window)

This command arranges all of the windows within the main Sierra Chart window in a horizontal layout.

The order in which the child windows which are part of the main Sierra Chart window, are tiled is according to the order they are set in Window >> Windows and Chartbooks . So if you want want to change the child window tiling order, change the order of those windows in Window >> Windows and Chartbooks and select Tile Horizontally again.

If there any child windows which are minimized, there will be space reserved at the bottom of the main Sierra Chart window for the minimized windows, so the tiled windows will be above those minimized child windows at the bottom.

Tile Vertically (Window)

This command arranges all of the windows within the main Sierra Chart window, in a vertical layout.

The order in which the child windows which are part of the main Sierra Chart window, are tiled is according to the order they are set in Window >> Windows and Chartbooks . So if you want want to change the child window tiling order, change the order of those windows in Window >> Windows and Chartbooks and select Tile Vertically again.

If there any child windows which are minimized, there will be space reserved at the bottom of the main Sierra Chart window for the minimized windows, so the tiled windows will be above those minimized child windows at the bottom.

Tile as Grid - Horizontally (Window)

This command arranges the windows in a grid arrangement. The columns will have the same number or more windows as the rows.

If the Use Windows Custom Grid Layout on the Global Settings >> General Settings >> Windows >> Window Tiling tab is selected, then the number of Rows and Columns is determined from the values in the Windows Grid Row Count and Windows Grid Column Count settings.

The order in which the child windows which are part of the main Sierra Chart window, are tiled is according to the order they are set in Window >> Windows and Chartbooks . So if you want want to change the child window tiling order, change the order of those windows in Window >> Windows and Chartbooks and select Tile as Grid - Horizontally again.

Maximize (Window)

This command maximizes the active child window of the main Sierra Chart window.

Minimize (Window)

This command minimizes the active child window of the main Sierra Chart window.

Restore (Window)

This command puts the active child window of the main Sierra Chart window in a Normal or Restored state.

Always on Top (Window)

This command only applies to charts which are detached from the main application window. When this option is checked, the detached chart window will always be on top of any other windows on your system. Refer to Detaching and Attaching Chart Windows for instructions to detach a chart.

Always on top also applies to Trading DOM windows. These are detached windows as well.

This command must be used from the detached window itself. It cannot be used from the main Sierra Chart window menu.

Window Always Visible (Window)

This command applies to charts windows. And it applies to Spreadsheet windows when they are being referenced by a Spreadsheet Study on a chart.

When this option is checked, indicating it is enabled, then a chart or Spreadsheet window will always remain visible even when it is part of a Chartbook that is not currently the active Chartbook.

This allows you to share a chart or Spreadsheet among multiple Chartbooks. The chart still belongs to its own Chartbook, but it still remains visible when another Chartbook is active.

Detach/Attach Window (Window)

This command applies to Chart, Spreadsheet, and Trading DOM windows. When this command is selected, if the Chart, Spreadsheet or Trading DOM window is currently attached to the main Sierra Chart window it will be detached. Otherwise, it will be reattached.

In the case of a detached window which you want to reattach to the main window, select the Detach/Attach Window command on the Window menu of the detached window.

Hide Window (Window)

When this command is selected, the active Chart window will be hidden. It will remain hidden even when the Chartbook it is contained in is reopened.

The general purpose to hide a Chart window is to keep it out of the way if it is not normally used and to greatly minimize CPU usage from it related to graphics output.

To make that Chart window visible again, select it from the CW menu.

When using the Previous Chart or Next Chart Window menu commands, hidden charts will be skipped.

In order to conserve operating system resources related to window objects when a chart is hidden, enable Global Settings >> General Settings >> Destroy Chart Windows when Hidden.

Arrange Minimized Windows (Window)

This command arranges all of the minimized window icons within the Sierra Chart desktop

Hide All Trade Windows (Window)

This command hides all of the visible trading related windows listed below, except for the Trade Windows for charts.

  • Trade >> Trade Orders Window
  • Trade >> Trade Positions Window
  • Trade >> Trade Activity Log
  • Trade >> Trade Service Log

Restore All Trade Windows (Window)

This command makes all of the trading related windows that were hidden with Hide All Trade Windows, visible again.

Control Bars >> Control Bar [1-8] (Window)

Refer to Window >> Control Bars >> Control Bar [1-8].

Previous Chart (Window)

This command will activate and display the previous chart in the visible Chartbook.

To set up a keyboard shortcut for this, refer to Customize Keyboard Shortcuts.

To use the Control Bar for this command, refer to Control Bar.

Another method to activate a chart is by using the MDI Window Tabs.

This command does not iterate among charts that are not part of the active Chartbook which have been made visible across Chartbooks through the Window >> Window Always Visible command.

Next Chart (Window)

This command will activate and display the next chart in the visible Chartbook.

To set up a keyboard shortcut for this, refer to Customize Keyboard Shortcuts.

To use the Control Bar for this command, refer to Control Bar.

Previous Chartbook (Window)

This command will activate and display the previous chartbook and hide the currently visible chartbook. If there is only one visible chartbook, then this command will not do anything. You can also use the keyboard shortcut that is displayed on the menu or add a Control Bar button under Global Settings >> Customize Control Bar for this command.

Next Chartbook (Window)

This command will activate and display the next chartbook and hide the currently visible chartbook. If there is only one visible chartbook, then this command will not do anything. You can also use the keyboard shortcut that is displayed on the menu or add a Control Bar button under Global Settings >> Customize Control Bar for this command.

Message Log (Window)

This command will display or hide the Message Log window.

Disable Visible Message Logging (Window)

By default, this command is disabled. This command can be enabled, and it will prevent any messages from being added to the Message Log window. If the Message Log is set to be written to a file, the file writing will still occur on another thread even when this command is enabled.

Alert Manager (Window)

This command will display or hide the Alert Manager window.

Reset Windows (Window)

This command resets the main chart window, all Values Windows, and the log windows to their default positions and size. Use this command if any of the windows are not visible. If the main window is not visible but shows up on your taskbar, then right click over the Sierra Chart icon on the taskbar and select Maximize. You can then select Reset Windows from the window menu.

Windows and Chartbooks (Window)

The Windows and Chartbooks command opens a window with a list of all of the open Chartbooks and all of the charts contained within each Chartbook.

Both attached and detached charts will be listed. Double-click with your Pointer on a window in the list, or highlight the window in the list and press OK to close the Windows and Chartbooks window and activate the chart.

Use the Move Up and Move Down buttons to reorder the chart windows to control the order in which the chart windows exist within the Chartbook. When the Chartbook is opened, they will be opened according to this order and when using the Tile Horizontally and Tile Vertically commands, this is the order that the windows will be tiled.

To uniquely identify chart windows which have the same symbol you will see the unique Chart Number (#) displayed for each chart in the list.

You can also go to a chart and select Chart >> Chart Settings >> Display >> Chart Display Items. In the Title Bar Name box, enter some unique descriptive text. This unique descriptive text will be displayed after the Symbol description text for a chart window in the list of Windows in the Windows and Chartbooks window, to help you identify which particular chart window each one is.

Current Quote Window (Window)

This command displays or hides the Current Quote Window.

The Current Quote Window displays the current daily session prices for the symbol while connected to the data feed. This includes the Date-Time, Open, High, Low, Last, Last Size, Volume, Number of Trades, Bid, Ask, Bid Size, Ask Size, and Ask Bid Difference, and Open Interest.

If this window does not appear when this command is checked on the menu, then select Window >>Reset Windows to restore its default position and size.

Chart Values Window (Window)

Displays or hides the Chart Values Window. The Chart Values Window displays the value for each Subgraph of every study graph on the chart and the main price graph values, for the last displayed column.

The Chart Values Window can be positioned anywhere on your desktop. If it does not display when you select Window >> Chart Values Window, then select Window >> Reset Windows . After this, open it again with Window >> Chart Values Window.

The contents of this window can be customized. Refer to the Hiding Study and Main Price Graph Names and Values from the Values Windows and Region Data Line help topic.

The background color of this window is set by the Chart Background color. The Chart Background color set through the Graphics Settings window. The colors of the lines in the Chart Values window depend upon the Chart Text color and the study colors. The Chart Text color is also set through the Graphics Settings window. To change the color of studies, refer to the Chart Studies page.

Tool Values Window (Window)

Displays or hides the Tool Values Window. The Tool Values Window displays the value for each Subgraph of every study graph on the chart and the main price graph values, at the column pointed to with one of the drawing Tools. Additional data relating to the drawing tool you are using is also displayed in this window. The Tool Values Window is especially useful to use with the Chart Values/Crosshair tool.

If this window does not appear when this command is checked on the menu, then select Window >>Reset Windows to restore its default position and size.

The background color of this window is set by the Chart Background color. The Chart Background color set through the Graphics Settings window. The colors of the lines in the Chart Values window depend upon the Chart Text color and the study colors. The Chart Text color is also set through the Graphics Settings window. To change the color of studies, refer to the Chart Studies page.

Show Compact Tool Values Window (Window)

When this option is enabled, then the Compact Tool Values Window will be displayed when you are using a Drawing Tool or the Chart Values Tool.

The Compact Tool Values Window displays the value for each Subgraph for the first study or the main price graph in the Chart Region that you are currently pointing to when using one of the Drawing Tools. Additional data relating to the Drawing Tool you are using is also displayed in this window.

When Global Settings >> Tool Settings >> Save Compact Tool Values (CTV) Window Position for Each Chart is enabled, the Compact Tool Values Window position will be saved and restored for individual charts. Otherwise, it maintains a global position.

You can click on the Compact Tool Values Window with your Pointer and drag it anywhere on the chart.

Chart or Spreadsheet Window Not Visible

If after opening a Chartbook, you find that not all Chart or Spreadsheet Windows are not visible, then you can find these windows under the CW menu.

One method to bring the windows into view is to select Window >> Cascade. If you still cannot see a particular window, then select it from the CW menu and then select Window >> Maximize.

Unable to Resize or Move Window

Make sure the windows have a title bar. Do not remove the title bars.

In the case of a chart, to put the title bar back, enable Chart >>Show Title Bar from the Chart or Trading DOM menu. You will then be able to move the window normally through the title bar. And you will have the Minimize, Restore and Maximize buttons at the top right of the window.

Users should not remove title bars or menus unless they understand the consequence of removing these. And the various malfunctions of these windows which can and will occur at the Windows operating system level when these get removed.
