Hello SierraChart support,

thanks for bringing more market stats recently. I really appreciate it.

As e-mini indicies trader I am glad to have new Advance-Decline nett issues, great job. But I also depend on NYSE TICK and the new one is very similar to the old one, almost exactly the same I would say. I did some comparison to prove that. You can see it in added charts. What bothers me is its behaviour at the open. It is very important where TICK opens and when it tests 0 level for first time. As you can see in charts, there is big difference in opening prints in SCH TICK and in TICK from other datafeed (at the bottom). I also have access to another two versions of TICKs and they all vary at some points, but they do calculate right at the open, which SCH TICK doesn't. I beg you for improving this big issue, it would make it much much useful. Thanks a lot.

Charts: top - old $TICK; middle - new TICK-NYSE; bottom - other TICK; highlighted values are 0,+-600,+-1000;time-frame 2Min
PS: besides opening difference, they also vary in absolute values on some extreme TICK readings, as well as distribution below/above 0 line, which is also very important to read correctly which side is in control

How do you know that?

We have noticed the difference at the open and it was discussed. Our conclusion was, that the way that Sierra Chart is calculating the TICK is correct from everything we can tell . Therefore, the conclusion is the others could not be correct.

For example, look at February 13. The US stock market according to the S&P 500 began to rise at the 9:30 AM open. Not all stocks at the open, are going to begin to trade. The TICK from the other source, which you are trusting is correct, starts out very negative. This does not seem logical. So therefore, how do you know that it is correct? You could not know that for certain.

Now that we have done our own calculations, we know we are doing it correct and we will provide a complete technical explanation as to how the calculations are done in order to develop confidence in what we are offering.

Another thing, you should only do comparisons of the data really since Tuesday of this week. Before that, the calculations were still under development and may not be as accurate as they should be.

Thanks for reply, it seems the situation is not so obvious. I am not sure and do not know which calculation is correct. You certainly did more research on it than I did and I accept your opinion.

The things is that opening at extremes like -+1000 etc occurs on big gaps between today's Open and previous day Close. This is logical for me, most of the stock opens on negative tick in case of downside gap. And this has lots of value in it, for instance, first test of zero line;, how long TICK holds below/above the zero line, if price follows or got rejected given extreme tick. For traders it is important and this is not my idea, I see this analyse on twitter between traders every day and never heard an opinion that it should open around zero.

I am not expert in this and do not know specific technical explanation, but I think this should be discussed more even with traders and possibly other providers of datafeed and why they are calculating it differently. As a trader who acutally using it, my opinion is that I don't find edge in this type of calculation of the open.

Thanks for more discussion on this issue.

In the case of the TICK, if the stock has not yet traded since the previous days trading session it will not be included in the calculation.

As soon as a stock begins to trade higher, even if it is down from the previous day, the previous close is no longer relevant and not used.
