Log of Changes and Improvements to Sierra Chart

This list contains major items of development, and changes and additions which users need to be informed about.

This is not a comprehensive changes and additions log. And it should never be relied upon for such. It only represents a very small percentage of the actual development being performed every day. The vast majority of development is not documented here. Or receives, one small comment after it is all complete. There are not version notes for each version. The main Sierra Chart documentation is updated as needed relating to the changes and additions.

The maintenance of this page has mostly been abandoned by Sierra Chart development for many years due to the difficulty of maintaining it and because users can be incorrectly misled by or misinterpret notes that are made here. This does not change, the development of Sierra Chart which is very active every day and new releases are made nearly weekly or several times a week. The Sierra Chart project is still very active, with extensive development and it remains a very high quality software in the world. The engineering is at the very top of the world.

  • 757 Release Date: 2011-09-08

    • Various other low-level improvements.
  • 756 Release Date: 2011-09-08

    • When changing between Historical daily data and Intraday data within the same chart, the Days to Load setting is remembered for each chart data type.
    • All unneeded menu items on the Trading DOM windows have been removed. And the Chart menu on a Trading DOM window has been renamed to Trade DOM.
    • Removed menu items which are also on the top level Trade menu from the Trade Window Settings (S) menu.
    • Added a new Volume Profile drawing tool. This can be found through Tools >> Draw Volume Profile. It allows you to insert a Volume by Price study for the highlighted Date-Time range. Refer to the Draw Volume Profile documentation for instructions.

  • 754 Release Date: 2011-09-03

    • It is now possible for a chart to change between an Intraday data chart or a Historical Daily data chart (used for bar periods with 1 day and greater). In Chart >> Chart Settings there is a new setting which allows you to change between a Historical Chart and an Intraday Chart. Or to always keep the chart as an Intraday Chart only. When you use any of the Toolbar buttons to change the period of the chart bars, the chart will automatically be changed to the appropriate data type needed. For example, if you currently have 1 minute bars and then you change to Daily bars, the chart will load Historical Daily data instead of Intraday data. Watch this video demonstration.
    • Various low-level Performance enhancements related to market data processing. There will be continued performance enhancements in the coming months.
    • Corrected a problem with the Volume by Price study where if the Number of Ticks per Volume Bar setting is initially set before applying the study to the chart, it would be incorrectly converted to an incorrect setting.
    • Updated the Volume by Price study to use the standard study Input list.
    • The initial release of our Trade Statistics reporting window has been released. This is found on the Trade >> Trade Activity Log >> Trade Stats tab. It provides detailed trade statistics based upon the displayed fills on the Trade Activity tab which are based on the control settings at the top of the window.
    • Removed support for the Inverse (-INV) data recording modes. These were seldom used. If you wish to invert the prices in a chart, use the 1/p study instead.
    • Various other low-level improvements and continued development with drawing tools.
  • 753 Release Date: 2011-08-19

    • Support for server-side OCO orders when using the CTS T4 service has been added.
    • Historical Daily data for Historical charts is now downloaded directly from the CTS T4 service instead of our own sources. Therefore, when using the CTS T4 service, if you have Historical charts you will need to change the symbol of those charts to use the CTS T4 symbol. The symbol can be changed through Chart >> Chart Settings. The CTS T4 symbols can be found through File >> Find Symbol. The procedure at the present time to open a new Historical Daily chart when using T4 with this version is to first find the symbol in File >> Find Symbol, copy it and then past it in to the File Name box in File >> New/Open Historical Chart. Once this is done, your chart will be part of a chartbook or you can simply open it from the file listed in the Open File window.
    • Updated the CTS T4 interface to use the newest API function for downloading historical data.
    • Added a Horizontal Grid Line Increment setting to the Scale settings. When this is set to something other than zero and horizontal grid lines are drawn, the grid lines will be drawn at the set increment, rounded to the nearest tick.
    • Various other low-level improvements and continued development with drawing tools.
  • 750 Release Date: 2011-08-19

    • It is now possible to Cancel a bar based back test. Simply press the Escape key on your keyboard when a bar based back test is running and Sierra Chart has the focus. A bar based back test is started with Trade >> AutoTrade System Bar Based BackTest.
    • When using the Adjust Regions tool and you are hovering over the boundary between chart regions, the dividing line that displays is thinner. It is now 2 pixels wide rather than 4 pixels wide. This is sufficient to see, however it is not too wide in case the Adjust Regions tool is always active when using other Tools.
    • There has been a 77% reduction of processing required to evaluate Simple Alerts. This improves the efficiency of Simple Alerts, the Color Bar Based on Alert Condition study and the Color Background based on Alert Condition study. This allows you to increase the Number of Bars to Calculate input significantly higher when using these studies without a significant increase in CPU load.
    • Corrected a long-standing issue where the shortcut keys for Copy, Cut and Paste commands in Settings (dialog) windows did not always work. They will work now.
    • Various low-level improvements.
  • 749 Release Date: 2011-08-18

    • Corrected a problem with the trading Scale Out feature where both orders in an OCO group would not be canceled if one of them were to be canceled due to a Scale Out action. This arose in a recent release relating to the change made to not cancel the other side of an OCO group of child orders when one of them is manually canceled.
    • Corrected some minor issues with editing of Global Symbol Settings.
    • Added support for the Scale Out functionality with Automated Trading. When Support Scale-Out is enabled on the Settings menu on the Trade Window for a chart, then Exit orders from automated trading systems will perform a Scale Out operation.

    • Corrected a problem where when the Profit/Loss Format setting is set to Currency Value in Chart Settings, it was not being saved.
    • Various low-level improvements.
  • 748 Release Date: 2011-08-13

    • Corrected a problem from a recent release with the Apply Global Symbol Settings command in Chart Settings where under certain conditions the Session Start Time and End Time would be set to 0:00 and 0:00, preventing most of the data from being displayed in the chart.
    • Various low-level improvements.
  • 747 Release Date: 2011-08-12

    • New Option: Tool Settings >> Square Drawing Anchors, allows anchors to be drawn as squares vs circles.
    • New Option: Tool Settings >> Anchor Uses Drawing Color, if enabled, drawing anchors are drawn with same color as underlying drawing, otherwise they use the next option.
    • New Option: Tool Settings >> Anchor Color, if anchors are not using the drawing color, this color is used instead for all drawings.
    • New Menu Item: Tools >> Show Chart Drawings, when disabled, all user drawn chart drawings are hidden on all charts. There is a toolbar button for this function as well.
    • When multiple drawings are selected, and drawing numbers are shown, the keyboard can be used to resolve the selection by typing the drawing number followed by the ENTER key.
    • Included the latest TransAct data feed interface files.
    • Various low-level improvements.
  • 746 Release Date: 2011-08-09

    • Renamed Session Position to Internal Position since by default the Session (Internal) Position data is saved between sessions and it is position data maintained by Sierra Chart. Therefor, this is a more correct term. The option to save the Internal Position data between sessions has been removed. It is now always saved between sessions.
    • Renamed Workbook and Worksheet to Spreadsheet. The documentation will be updated as soon as possible. All of the former Worksheet studies now begin with Spreadsheet. For example: Spreadsheet Study .
    • Included updated TransAct price feed interface files that have been provided by TransAct.
    • Revision 2: The Color Background Based on Alert Condition study was updated in a recent release to use the new Background Draw Style. This created a drawing problem with existing instances of this study on charts and in study collections. This has now been resolved and the Draw Style is now always forced to Background.
    • Beginning with version 731, for Spreadsheet studies, we force the input Support All Subgraphs to Yes. This is intended to be removed soon. It is an outdated input setting to maintain compatibility for custom Spreadsheet studies developed years ago. It is being removed to avoid any potential confusion and simplify the internal code. If your existing Spreadsheet Study configurations have it set to No, then you will need to examine how all of the study subgraphs are now outputted to the columns beginning at AA and update your formulas appropriately. Until then, avoid using versions 731 or greater if this change will affect your use of the Spreadsheet studies.
    • Various low-level improvements.
  • 745 Release Date: 2011-08-04

    • Fixed an issue with the new market statistics data feed where if there is an internal reconnection to the data feed, the updates for the market statistics symbols would not start. This has been resolved.
    • Improved the identification of whether a trade should be considered a bid trade or ask trade when the trade is between the current known bid and ask price. This improves the accuracy of Bid Volume and Ask Volume.
    • Improvements with the processing of the Trading Technologies data feed.
    • Corrected an issue that when there are a large number of cells highlighted on a Spreadsheet and the Spreadsheet is active, Sierra Chart could become sluggish when accessing the menus.
    • Renamed the Worksheet menu to Spreadsheet. Moved the commands that are specific to Spreadsheets from the Edit menu to the Spreadsheet menu.
    • Continued improvement to Drawing Tools.
    • New Bar Based Back Testing: Sierra Chart now has the capability to perform a high-speed back test using the loaded bar data on both Historical and Intraday charts. This type of back testing is less precise than using a replay from the data file records. Although, the advantage is that it is fast and works with Historical charts as well.

Attached Orders and the use of Trailing stops can still be used with this type of back test. The way we implement back testing in Sierra Chart is very much like real trading in the live market using actual order types.

To access this feature select Trade >> Auto Trade System Bar Based BackTest on the menu.

The results can can be viewed in Trade >> Trade Activity Log. And Trade >> Trade Positions Window.
    • Corrected a problem with the selection of Alert Sounds in General Settings when the current alert sound is blank. This issue arose in 744.
    • Various low-level improvements.
  • 741 Release Date: 2011-07-28

    • Removed the user contributed studies from the Sierra Chart Custom Studies and Examples list in Analysis >> Studies >> Add Custom Study, and moved them to the User Contributed Studies list. Therefore, when you are using this version or higher and you are using user contributed studies, you may get an error with those studies and have to remove them from the chart and then add them again from the User Contributed Studies list.
    • Due to some changes in recent versions with the internal structure of the Toolbar, if you upgraded to one of these recent versions, the Toolbar buttons may have changed from your configuration. This has now been resolved and the Toolbar will have your prior configuration in this version. However, if you already made changes to your Toolbar to restore it to the way that you had it before after updating to a recent version, then with 741 you will notice a problem again and you will have to reconfigure your Toolbar. Going forward this will not be an issue.
    • Continued drawing tool development. Corrected some issues with recent drawing tool development.
    • Corrected a problem with deleting retracement/extension drawing levels under a certain condition.
    • Corrected a problem with the new Reversal Bars type.
    • When an Attached Order is canceled the other order in the same OCO group, is not automatically canceled. For example, this lets you cancel a Target or a Stop and the corresponding Stop or Target will remain in effect. The other order in an Attached Order group will still be canceled when one of them fills.
    • There has been a change with the ACSIL member sc.VolumeAtPriceForBars. The prices are now stored in Ticks as an integer rather than float values. Therefore, to convert to the actual price you need to use: float Price = it->first * sc.TickSize;. For the current code example, refer to the scsf_VolumeAtPriceArrayTest study function in the /ACS_Source/studies7.cpp file.
    • New option: Tool Settings >> Double Click Brings Up Drawing Properties.
    • Retracement tools now allow zero and 100% levels/labels to be used to adjust drawings.

    • Various low-level improvements.
  • 739 Release Date: 2011-07-22

    • Corrected some minor issues with the handling of the filter settings on the Trade >> Trade Activity Log window. Attached Orders that were submitted during a chart replay would not be displayed when Replay/Backtest is selected.
    • Corrected a problem with Numbers Bars where when using a small tick size, this would need to be .01 or smaller, the volume at a particular price level within a Numbers Bar may not have shown the total volume for that price level. This would only have affected some price levels. This issue has been resolved. Total volume calculations were not affected. Other volume related studies were not affected.
    • Various fixes to drawing tools related to the tool development that is ongoing.
    • New option: Tool Settings >> General >> AutoSnap Sensitivity - controls how sensitive the snapping is when moving the mouse.
    • New option: Tool Settings >> General >> Include Open/Close In AutoSnap - allows either OHLC or HL to be used in AutoSnap calculation.
    • Parallel Lines can now be moved as a group that maintains the original drawing shape. This can be accomplished with the context menu Move Line options or by selecting the middle portion of the original trend line (between two anchors).
    • Linear/Raff Regression Channels can now be moved as a group that maintains the original drawing shape and does not recalculate the channel. If the channel is adjusted, then the channel will recalculate.
    • Various low level improvements.
  • 737 Release Date: 2011-07-20

    • Added new Constant Range scale options to the Scale window. These are useful when using the Chart DOM and Trading DOM. For the fastest access to these options, right-click on the scale numbers on the right side of the chart or Trading DOM and select Scale. One of the options will cause automatic centering to always use the Last price when you are using Constant Range with Auto Centering , instead of the average price of the last 2 bars. The other option relates to automatic scale adjustments when using Constant Range scaling, to keep the High-Low of the last bar or the last trade price, in the case of a Trading DOM, always within view. This can be disabled if this kind of functionality is not desired when using the Trading DOM.
    • There is now the ability to set the text color independently for Numbers Bars. This color setting is available in the Global Settings/Chart >> Graphics Settings window. Additionally, the last trade price on the last Numbers Bar, is bolded and has a slightly larger font.

    • Continued improvements with drawing Tools. Resolve some issues with chart drawing selection for modification of a drawing.
    • There were some internal changes to the sc.SymbolData structure. If an Advanced Custom Study (ACSIL), uses this ACSIL member, then the DLL file will have to be rebuilt on this version in order for it to function properly.
    • Improvements to the Chart >> Chart Settings >> Continuous Futures Contract feature for creating futures continuation charts.
    • Various low level improvements.
  • 735 Release Date: 2011-07-18

    • Added support for Reversal Bars as a basic bar type. This is set through Chart >> Chart Settings >> Intraday Bar Period. This is very similar to the Point and Figure Chart study. This type is most useful when using the Numbers Bars Graph Draw Types. With this new Bar Period Type, there is no longer any need to use the Point and Figure chart unless you require some of the special features that it provides.
    • Improved the IQ Feed data feed connection and reconnection code.
    • Upcoming: Added support for two new Range Bar types: Gap Filled and True. Gap filled bars do exactly what is said and fill in the price gaps. True Range bars, are bars that have the specified Range in Ticks, if possible, and do not have any modification of the open, high, low and close values of the bar. These are pure unmodified range bars.
    • Updated the Parabolic study to reverse on the bar that intersects the parabolic value rather than the subsequent bar.
    • New option on Tools >> Settings >> General Tab >> Require SHIFT key for Click Thru of Multiple Drawings: By default this is on, and the click thru operates as it did previously, which requires the SHIFT key to be pressed to cycle thru multiple drawings that can be selected with the current mouse click. When you clear this option, click thru will work with no SHIFT key being pressed.
    • New option on Tools >> Settings >> General Tab >> Allow Drag To Modify Chart Drawing: By default this is off, and a mouse click is required to start a modification and a mouse click is required to place the final point. When turned on, the mouse down selects the anchor point and starts the modification, dragging continues the modification, and the mouse up places the final point.
    • New option on Tools >> Settings >> General Tab >> Keep Chart Drawing Selected After Modification: By default this is off, and drawings are not selected after a modification. When turned on, a chart drawing remains selected after being modified, so you can immediately modify the same or different anchor point.
    • Pitchfork was changed so the first portion of the center line can be selected to adjust the first point.
    • Linear Regression Tool / Raff Regression Channel
      • These have been reworked to be stand alone tools instead of just a group of trendlines.
      • The Raff Regression Channel was broke out to be a distinct tool type, was added to the Tools menu, and a toolbar button was added.
      • Both regression types can be cut/extended like normal extending trendlines. The cut just turns the extensions off, and does not "cut".
      • Both regression types can be used as targets for "Make Lines Parallel".
      • Each linear regression tool instance has its own levels that can be modified with the chart drawing properties dialog.
      • The adjust/move drawings work like other drawings. The anchors can be selected or the ends of the level lines can also be selected to adjust. Move allows the drawing to slide left or right. The channel will recalculate based on adjustment/movement.
    • Various low level improvements.

    • Various drawing tool related improvements.
    • Corrected a bug with loading continuous Intraday charts when using the Continous Futures Contract option in Chart >> Chart Settings, where the chart's main symbol would be loaded more than once. This problem may have caused duplicate data in the chart, and a point where the timestamps jump back to the beginning of the file.
    • Various low level improvements.
  • 729 Release Date: 2011-07-1

    • This version supports an additional method to select and then Move or Adjust chart drawings. • An option has been added to the Trade menu named Only Orders From Chart. This option applies to each individual chart. It applies to the active chart when enabling it or disabling it. When this option is checked, then only orders that originated from the chart are displayed. All other orders from other charts or Trading DOMs are not displayed.
    • Updated the Rithmic software interface files to the latest files provided by Rithmic. We are told that this now will allow a connection to succeed to Rithmic when running Sierra Chart under Wine on Linux.
    • You can now change the background color of the Trade Window and the Chart Trade Mode box at the top left of the chart to a different color to indicate you are in Trade Simulation Mode . This color is controlled through Global Settings >> Trade Settings >> Chart Trade Settings >> Chart Trade Mode Box Color. There are going to be a few changes with this in the next release to improve the customization further.
    • Eurex symbols can now be used with the PFG Best Trading service.
    • Various low-level improvements.
  • 704 Release Date: 2011-05-09

    • Improved the Study/Price Overlay study when used on a fixed time period per bar chart, where it will filter out data from the source chart which is beyond the ending time of the last bar in the chart. This is useful when performing back testing.
    • The Color Bar Based on Alert Condition and Color Background Based on Alert Condition studies no longer have the ability to reference Alert Condition formulas from other studies and instead must contain their own Alert Condition formula. The input Use Alert Condition From has been removed. This is meant to simplify the study and eliminate confusion. This feature has caused some users confusion. So therefore when updating to 703, if you are using one of these studies and they refer to Alert Condition formulas defined in other studies, you will need to put the formula directly on the study itself and make the necessary changes to the references to other studies (Example: SG1 will need to become ID1.SG1 assuming it is referring to the study with ID1).
    • Resolved an issue with the mapping of Volume at Price data from a one tick underlying chart to a custom chart. This resolved an issue when using a Point and Figure chart on a 1 tick underlying chart with a Numbers Bars Graph Draw Type.
    • Various low-level improvements.
  • 702 Release Date: 2011-04-29

    • Added a new Renko Chart study named Renko Chart Enhanced. This is an enhanced version of the existing Renko Chart study that includes many user requested enhancements.
    • Added the ability to fully reset the Global Symbol Settings to defaults. Select Global Settings >> Symbol Settings. Press the Full Reset button and press OK. This will delete all existing Global Symbol Settings and download new settings for the currently selected Data or Trading service. The related settings you already have set on existing charts, will not be affected by this. If you wish to update a particular chart to the standard default settings for a symbol, then go to the chart and select Chart >> Chart Settings and press the Apply Global Symbol Settings button.
    • On the ChartDOM, when the order quantities for a price exceed 1000, they are abbreviated with K. So the ChartDOM does not become too wide.
    • The Download Historical Daily Chart Data and Cancel Download commands have been removed from the File menu. There is no longer a reason to download historical daily chart data for all of your chart data files at once. Support for this has been discontinued. When you open a Historical chart, the Historical Daily data will be downloaded at that time for that symbol if necessary. Also, when using the Chart >> Associated Symbol List, as you iterate through that symbol list either manually or as part of a Scan, historical data will be downloaded even if you do not already have a data file for a particular symbol. When scanning through all of your data files, historical data will be downloaded for each one if necessary during the Scan. If for some reason you want to update a large group of your data files at once, then what you need to do is add those symbols to a Associated Symbol List for a chart and then initiate a Scan on that chart based on the Associated Symbol List. The download will be done for all of the symbols in the list.
    • Continued improvements to the File >> Find Symbol feature and Global Settings >> Symbol Settings.
    • Additional improvements to the new Compact Tool Values Window. This can be enabled and disabled with Window >> Show Compact Tool Values Window. This window automatically displays when you use a tool or the Chart Values tool. The main improvement is that it is a single window for all charts that can be moved anywhere on your desktop.
    • Various low-level improvements.
  • 700 Release Date: 2011-04-26

    • We have developed a new Compact Tool Values Window which is intended to replace the OHLC and tool data displayed in the status bar. The status bar did not display information clearly as could be and within the context of individual charts. The longer-term plan is to remove the Status Bar and to eliminate dependency on it. The data feed status and the currently selected tool, will be relocated. This version includes various updates to the Compact Tool Values Window.

For information about the Compact Tool Values window, refer to the Viewing Chart and Tool Data section. Here is an Example. The new Compact Tool Values window is very easily grabbed and moved anywhere on the chart.

Based on feedback some users have not become completely accustomed to the new Compact Tool Values window and all of the functionality available with that window, the Tool Values Window and the Chart Values tool which is more than suitable as a replacement. Therefore, we have temporarily restored the Chart Values data to the status bar for now.

You can customize what is displayed by selecting Chart >> Chart Settings >> Advanced Settings >> Settings. You can uncheck the fields you do not want.
    • Various low-level improvements.
